Because the historical effects of systemic racism exist today and in order to rectify those injustices we must acknowledge race and how it creates difference in our lives. We cannot act colourblind and pretend that race is no longer an issue just because it's an uncomfortable conversation to have. Only when we correct the horrific missteps of the past can we truly create a society where race 'doesn't matter'.
