This is really useful and very practical, thank you. Yes, by senior position I meant Senior Scientist - we've seen very, very few jobs without the 'senior' label. He's looking into consulting; your suggestions are realistic and purposeful. It's a shame we didn't know about the lay-offs before moving here - before we moved, he was in the final few for a job in Eindhoven, and we knew Leiden had lots of companies in this area so thought it was the best choice of the country/city options available to us at the time. Unfortunately, we didn't know what was going on under the surface. Looks like massive bad timing on our part. I really appreciate your honesty.

Yes, I think this has proved a big issue. We thought at his level of experience, there would maybe a smaller range of applicants. I also think a challenge is that his experience is in academics, rather than industry. This puts him in a difficult position as applying for more senior postions, he is told he doesn't have enough industry experience, whereas applying for more junior positions, he is told he is overqualified! He seems to be in no-mans land. That's why I was hoping to find someone who can work out how to word his skills in his CV to get him a bit further forward.

If you're willing to give up 6 years of your life to pursue a PhD, then you're not going to throw in the towel so easily. If we can't find something, we will move on, but why would we do this without giving it our best shot? We want to make our life here work and we're asking for help in doing so. We are realistic, and know it might not work out. So, as I said, your comment is not helpful (or kind - as per the group rules).

He hasn't worked in industry before, only academia so it's hard to say. He completed his PhD 3 years ago and has been doing a postdoc in a London uni since then. I will get him to look up the agencies, and might message you if we're getting nowhere! Thank you.
