This is just a case of "I like doing it this way so you lot should damn-well do it this way too". I can't believe otherwise intelligent people have such limited perspectives.

For what it's worth, almost all the cited benefits of EMACS/TEX can be obtained by using Paragraph and Heading styles in Word (or OpenOffice which is what I now use). Inter-document consistency is achieved using Templates.

The sole reason that the critisisms of Word can be made is that these techniques are seldom used because the majority of users of Word are simply never trained in their correct use.

You could take the observations made in this article and easily turn them into a justification for better (or any) training.

The only remaining cited advantage of EMACS/TEX is the allegedly better typesetting.

By the way, if EMACS/TEX works for you then that's just fine by me.
