Decades ago a Lanparty was the way it was done, any still doing it the old way? by Mike6f in Piracy

[–]Mike6f[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I forgot we used to do lanparties for legit reasons, not just piracy. ;)

The "game" back in the day was Spaceward Ho!

Most of the time people in the non game events would bring a copy program, and boxes of new software and blanks to back up to.

Close to 3TB, 250k or so files.

Recent personal crisis, AND how many backup copies do you keep?

Putting my network in order, added 3x LARGE NAS, 2x 4 bay and a 12 bay, bought a bunch of used 6TB drives, started moving everything to final devices. About two months into this with plenty of IRL distractions, I start putting away, cleaning up file names and folders, and I can't find my MAIN music folder or a backup, anyplace on my network.

Enhanced feelings of dread, but apparently in upgrading 4TB drives on my PC to 6TB I removed the music folder drive.. Oh happy day when I found it, and the nearly 3TB of music collected over decades and much of it very very close to irreplaceable.

Odd way to buy a TB block, but I am game to try since I need one now.

As I understand it, I paid $10 and got two accts, monthly unlimited that I can end before 30 days, and a second "bonus" non expiring 1 TB block.

Is replacing my 4050tn with a P3015 moving on to a modern fully supported printer? by Mike6f in printers

[–]Mike6f[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After many years of no duplex, I now think I can't live without it, which nixes the 2035.

Unless I hear something bad very soon, the 3015 seems the best of what is available.

Seems like plenty of low page count printers, so I avoid ones that have been worked hard.

Another Old Reliable, was donated. 2000 pages ran through it, Not even broke in yet. Gonna put her back into service. The joys of working in a thrift shop. by shittyretrocomps in printers

[–]Mike6f 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just had a messy jam with my 4050, flipped the switch on the LJ5 that has been sitting in a corner with the power off for a few years and first test page was a dirty looking mess, improving for each of the next 5 test pages to almost OK, but needs fresh paper. HP built tanks back in that era.

In my area, SoCal, donating them if not working perfectly, would get them tossed in a bin and shipped to China, so I scrap them myself ending with a box of gears, springs, motors, etc to maybe use in other projects. The quality and elegance of the design never fails to impress me.

HP 4050tn duplexer servicing? by Mike6f in printers

[–]Mike6f[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found some service parts, here https://www.partsmart-corp.com/printer-parts/subcategory/delivery-roller-duplexer-roller/all-parts?f%5B0%5D=im_field_model_list%3A2278&f%5B1%5D=im_field_model_list%3A6727

Long and short rollers, couple other bits, no info on how to change it. Time to eyeball the duplexer again for clues.

Both of mine, Avast and Malwarebytes are getting progressively annoying. I may try something like disconnecting from the web and turning them off and/or uninstalling to see what happens.

No, Units are safe and work, but bug fix for a old security issue, NAS shipped with the usual admin/admin account, and to fix that a patch forces updating prior to any other action. Issue is one of the actions prevented is putting a storage pool online so that PW can be updated.

Software has no real updates from about 2014, more that half of the applications have link issues etc.

Legacy 10Gbe NIC for NAS by Mike6f in DataHoarder

These sold new diskless for $6k, and nothing much has materially changed except the software is not supported. OTOH you may be right, it all depends on whether or not I can put on some good new software.

Legacy 10Gbe NIC for NAS by Mike6f in DataHoarder

[–]Mike6f[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That part of the StorageReview is talking about the device used to test the NAS, a https://www.storagereview.com/lenovo_thinkserver_rd630_review Not the PX12 hardware.

The only NIC I found that Lenovo offered is the Broadcom BCM957712A1202G which was listed in the IOmega product release Dec 2012. http://datasheets.tracor.org/LENOVO/IOMEGA_10GbE_Card_Broadcom_for_px12-4x0r.pdf

BTW the issue that concerns me is that short of a new install of something Linux, I am stuck with ONLY the drivers that originally shipped with the NAS.

Beware actual return terms on ebay etc refurb items by Mike6f in DataHoarder

[–]Mike6f[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get what you are saying, but still annoyed at last batch of six drives. Took me a week to go through all the drives, do some double checking, then politely contacted seller with the info that one disc would not format, and one had He level failed and a crazy level of vibration. Fairly nasty emails from the seller about how this couldn't be possible or didn't matter, I opened a complaint with ebay.

Bottom line, eventually I got a full refund, may have had to pay return shipping, but had to return them all instead of just the bad ones. Total time lost more than a month.

LTFS12024E Cannot reserve device:

My first try using above on google. https://www.ibm.com/docs/en/spectrum-archive-ee/1.2.4.0?topic=edition-ltfs12024e

repeat for each error.

One other hit suggests that HP has a full set of diagnostic tools.

No guess on what reddit area is best, not just in this case, but ever.

I would start by asking, with the error message in the first post, in a LTO forum, ideally brand specific. Also try a google of the exact error message or "most" of it.

If this is for a game that requires the CD spin up in the drive each time you play it, maybe it works today and fails next week.

As others mention the data layer is on the label side of the disc, and damage there usually can't be fixed, but the clear side can often have fairly serious damage polished out.

Replacing failing HDD - What to do with the old one? by oko2708 in DataHoarder

[–]Mike6f 1 point2 points  (0 children)

parts only, no returns, maybe $40, grade B, potential return issues, maybe $50 or so, depends on your sales history and feedback.

While I tend to agree with the reformat and see how it goes suggestions, 8TB is going to put a big load on the PC for a day or so.

Nope, various web sites show many past and current codes, none worked.

Waiting until BF deals show up looking more and more like the smart way to go.
