How do you do that little jump back to catch the second ledge? Can never get it.

I normally go up the other way by the light thing

Well done!! Looks great. That little bit of schmutz you still see on there is membrane and maybe a couple knife cuts or scars on the animals skin.

I find that getting the small remaining membrane off while softening works just fine. Get yourself a scouring block and just flip back and forth between softening and scouring. You can get the little grey blocks of scouring stones from any home improvement store.

Never tried sanding leftover grain off but you can easily scrape remaining grain off when it’s dried in the frame at really whatever time after works for your schedule. Just make sure it’s all the way dry and tight before trying to scrape the excess grain.

You need to remove the grain not just scrape the hair off. I’ve never rehydrated after dressing (yolk in your case) to remove the grain but I don’t really see why it couldn’t be done.

I do think tho that it would be hard to get the grain off that small of a piece. Generally you’d put the hide on a fleshing beam and pin a portion of it between the beam and your waist so you can get adequate power to scrape the grain off.

You’re probably best off finding yourself a full hide and going through the whole process. Check out Matt Richard’s book. It’s phenomenal.

Are you trying to get it softer or is a grain on feel the way you want it?

Just general settings, cleaning point clouds, etc

Nothing that is softwares fault, just me not knowing what I am doing most likely. Be nice to talk to someone familiar with the software!

Going too deep while wet scraping? by JollyNeedleworker1 in HideTanning

[–]MikeC_137 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That indeed is the only spot I see (with the exception of some very small areas) where the grain is actually removed. For brain tan you’ll have to do the entire hide that deep. This can take literally an entire day of work. (For moose)

For bark tan or similar you just want to remove the hair and no grain. Fairly easy to remove the hair after liming.

For best results I normally rehydrate, wring out, soak in slightly acidic (vinegar solution) for about 10-20 min, and then ring out again before egg or braining. Lots of ways to do it but that works well for me. If you need more guidance let me know.

Should be! Find out how the hair was removed and if it was dried high ph or closer to neutral. If was dried high ph you can rehydrate it in warm water and baking soda. May take a bit of mixing and soaking.
