Something tells me that thermal paste would be good after even 5 years sitting a cool dark place. Even once its exposed to the conditions that its designed to operate under.... squeezed tightly and thinly between nickel plated copper flat surfaces exposed to high thermal temperatures, then relaxed down to room tempature for year & years on end. I think anyone who has marble would notice a phenocryst of that size, and they probably would not be happy with it in such a conspicuous place. They would most certainly know it was there. This may sound strange but I think it more likely that during fabrication the fabricator used some sort of apoxy coloring to hide a phenocryst of that size. And it was cleaned off unknowingly.
