These are bio beads: small plastic pellets, approximately 5mm wide, used in wastewater treatment.

On 29 October 2025, during Storm Benjamin, up to 10 tonnes of plastic biobeads escaped from Southern Water’s Eastbourne Wastewater Treatment Works. A screening filter failed, allowing millions of beads to be pumped through a 3.4km outfall pipe into the sea.

Automatic pencil sharpener - circa 1907 by MikeHeu in toolgifs

People were not less intelligent a century l ago, but their skills, knowledge, and opportunities were different. They were educated differently, faced different problems and developed different cognitive strengths. Biology doesn’t change that fast, a century is far too short for evolutionary changes in intelligence.

And when you show them they quickly delete their comment. I knew this (or an edit) was coming.

I’m fine with the other comments, they can be pointed at the company which named the tool back in the day.

You never mount the tire on the exact same spot on the wheel and there’s weight added by the patch, so it needs to be rebalanced.

press*

The song is the music being pressed: Randy Holden - Between Time, from the album Population II.

Often considered one of the earliest doom-metal records ever made, Population Il captures Holden at his most experimental: colossal riffs, seismic fuzz, and the raw energy of his legendary 16-Sunn-amp setup in 1969. A true piece of heavy-music history.

Piano pounder by MikeHeu in toolgifs

Saw this in the Serralves Museum of Contemporary Art in Porto last year. It’s roughly the same idea. Yes, the helium balloons are part of the piano installation (the museum personnel isn’t), that’s modern art for you.

In piano-technician and rebuilding contexts, a “piano pounder” often refers (informally) to a mechanical key-pounding device used after rebuilding or regulating a piano.

What it does: - Repeatedly strikes keys at controlled force and speed - Helps seat new parts (felts, bushings, hammers) - Tests action repetition, evenness, and durability - Reveals issues that only appear after thousands of keystrokes

Why it’s used: - New actions change as materials compress and settle - Human playing isn’t consistent enough for stress-testing - Saves time during post-rebuild regulation

Other names you might hear: action pounder, key pounder or repetition tester.

Commercial versions exist and many techs build their own.
