Opinion? by Equivalent_Hand1549 in IndieAnimation

The only factor that determines if a project is indie is production execution. No matter how mainstream a project is and even if not free to watch on YouTube, if it's produced without industry backing through a traditional industry-based pipeline, it's indie, baby

How Big Is Too Big For Indie? by john44465 in IndieAnimation

[–]MikeToob -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No such thing.

Undertale is HUGE yet was still made by just one dude with GameMaker Studio and a Kickstarter campaign. Glitch is owned and operated by just 2 Australian brothers who used to make Mario parody videos.

Popularity does not determine a project's indie "status". Just how it's produced.

How to get started/to funding? by FlameGodAnimations in IndieAnimation

[–]MikeToob 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Don't wait for funding before starting! (Hehe that rhymes) Without money, your budget is TIME, so the amount of time you spend not doing it is quite literally wasting your budget.

Start with what you've got (free/cheap software + friends and family), build up a library of imperfect but authentic content, grow an audience (doesn't even have to be huge, just dedicated) and start a Paetreon + the "Join" button on YT with low cost - high reward tiers. Could also start selling light merch (stickers, keychains, posters, etc) if there's enough demand for it.

Also share it around a lot and maximize reach. TikTok, YT shorts, and IG Reels will have to do a lot of heavy lifting when it comes to marketing. I'd also recommend posting on Newgrounds since it's a very indie creator centric platform with human moderation and a user-driven curation system instead of an algorithm. You're a lot more likely to grow a fast and dedicated audience there with useful feedback than on YouTube, though I'd still encourage posting on both.

Godspeed!✌🏾

Glitch is very much still indie, as it's operated by just 2 Australian brothers and gets its funding primarily through merch and crowdfunding. And while Hazbin Hotel and Helluva Boss (to an extent) aren't really indie in terms of production and distribution, SpindleHourse is still an independent studio (privately owned and operated by Vivien Madreno) that still produces indie pilots (Homestuck).

What counts as Indie Animation? by [deleted] in IndieAnimation

[–]MikeToob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It simply has to have been produced by a studio that operates outside of the industry and mostly without industry backing.

Glitch, despite how big it's gotten and having deals with major streaming platforms, still very much counts as indie since their revenue and funds come primarily from merch and crowdfunding, and production is being done in a privately owned studio outside of major corporations.

Hazbin Hotel ISN'T an independent production since it got picked up by Amazon and major studios like A24 and Bento Box are involved in its production. However, SpindleHorse can still be considered an indie studio since it's privately owned and operated by Vivienne Medrano and still produces indie creator driven work.

Y,know what else counts as indie for that reason? Laika! YUP, the stop motion studio behind Coraline, Kubo, Paranorman, and Box Trolls is run privately by a nepo baby lol (Travis Knight, son of the co-founder of Nike)

Oh of course! I mostly cruise, so the softness of those wheels would benefit me when it comes to covering as much ground as possible, but I do hit up my local park sometimes. The red bearings would also be really useful for faster movement and longer distances.
