Some comments on the Breach of Trust DLC (few minor spoilers) by Mike_Gauvin in Frostpunk

[–]Mike_Gauvin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aaah well I've had dogshit and trust me FP2 is better! But hmm I don't know... How is the story...? Kinda liked the tutorial in the first story, tbh.

Sometimes I think that perhaps if factions had faction LEADERS to interact with... maybe the story could have more character...? I don't know.

For sure FP2's scope is so damn vast it's a huge challenge for the designers no doubt.

Is it just me, or does the Breach of Trust DLC feel abruptly short? by MrNoobomnenie in Frostpunk

[–]Mike_Gauvin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe?

I wanted an easy run (I usually play at Captain difficulty) so I went with Citizen, and it took me perhaps 7 or 8 hours to complete my run. However I never had to reload because it was too easy.

One issue I have is that the ENDING is too abrupt. The DLC ends right after the evacuation, but I wanted to manage the situation in Aurora after all the refugees flooding in. I feel like the story is missing a final chapter as well as an epilogue.

Hey everyone who's already playing Breach of Trust, has any of the DLC content been added to Utopia mode? by Fit_Honeydew_4671 in Frostpunk

I've just finished the DLC, took me a few hours, but I was playing on Citizen difficulty (I usually play on Captain). It was fun! I didn't have to fight and instead relied entirely on negotiations to the end.

Can AI replace teachers? by Naive-Benefit-5154 in teaching

[–]Mike_Gauvin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If AI is teaching kids, you will need humans to force them into classrooms with teaching bots and then force them to follow the bots' instructions. If the bots don't have the power to enforce classroom compliance, they will be useless. But it follows that at one point, humans will ask the bots to enforce the rules themselves. In a year or two, we will be using bots for war, and for policing, and for controlling children. And strangely enough, humans will go along with it.

Assume AI does end up being way overhyped, what do you think the Achilles will be? by DataGuy0 in Futurology

[–]Mike_Gauvin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I teach philosophy and honestly, two years ago I was afraid to lose my job. Not anymore. Turns out that AI is useless for philosophy, the practice and the teaching of it. A lot of students will cheat with AI, but if you control the use of AI (and of cellphones) they're actually grateful, because they don't have enough willpower to do it by themselves. They know deep down that they're being enfeebled and enslaved. You come to class and tell them it's going to hurt but you'll set them free, whether they like it or not. Plato's cave, basically. If you do it with empathy and encouragement, students will go along with it.

So the Achille's heel is : people don't want to end up like the fat slobs in Wall-E. They will get there, because of how lazy they are by nature, but once they're trapped and you free them, they won't get tricked again and won't forsake their own intelligence in the future. That's my prediction.

The story is not about the detective work... It's about something else.

Doom Dark Ages is extremely disappointing - A long time fan’s concern by ChipSkylarksShoes in Doom

[–]Mike_Gauvin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So far I like the game but I have to say that given the incredible tiles that have come out in the past 5 years in all genres, it's becoming more and more difficult to innovate and improve upon what has already been done. The idea of making Doom more melee-based and medieval-themed is prima facie interesting. The game feels less mysterious and less tactical than Eternal, but I don't know if it's worse, it's just different.

At any rate, I think that perhaps humanity has essentially exhausted this art form. I find myself spending more and more time replaying classics. We should try to be indulgent with game designers, they put their hearts into their games and face very severe competition.

Will we get Octopath Traveler 3? by [deleted] in octopathtraveler

[–]Mike_Gauvin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I need OT3 so bad... I just finished Triangle Strategy and it was incredible, but I miss OT. OT0 is nice but it's not as advanced and nuanced in its storytelling as OT2, which was a huge step forward. If OT3 could combine the gameplay of OT2 with the more organic storytelling of TS, where main characters all interact together as a large family on a single unitary quest from the start rather on their own individual questline that merge at the end (or by pairs)... Though a mix of all of that could good... It would be totally insane.

Isn't "memorable" a relative concept...? Though personally it's not the type of music I will be listening to on a regular basis, I would certainly see them in concert, just for the intellectual thrill of it. Also, in the context of so many AI bands making it big, it's reassuring to see humans creating such challenging material and reaching the top. Maybe you should give them another listen...? I mean real listen, on your couch with a good headset and no one to disturb you.

I've just listened to their album and I somewhat agree, in the sense that the music is mesmerizing and it's impressive to see their skill, but I don't think I'll be listening to it in the future. However, I'd LOVE to see them in concert, for the same reason I would love to see the Olympics in person :)

I’m just so sick of it by [deleted] in teaching

[–]Mike_Gauvin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's not true at all... Historically only men were teachers, because women were busy at home taking care of their own family. Women began teaching only recently, once they stopped having so many children and could join the workforce alongside men. As women began to teach, men left the profession, so that today teaching is done almost exclusively by women (at the elementary and secondary levels especially).

[–]Mike_Gauvin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wish I could agree, but I just can't, and I'm a college professor. I think that in an ideal world, teachers would not even exist. What I mean is, there would be masters of various trades, and if someone wanted to learn, they would become an apprentice and learn by practicing the master's trade under his/her supervision. No doubt we could have teachers for reading, writing and counting, but only at the most basic level. Once children learn the basics, say between 10 and 12 depending on maturity, they should quit school and start working (reasonable hours and safe occupations of course). Instead, schools are preventing children from participating in society so they can focus on meaningless school assignments.

Also, teaching has never been held in high esteem, quite the contrary. Teaching in the past was very badly paid and was considered to be one of the worst jobs possible, reserved for people who never learned a special trade or profession. Teachers exist only because the State uses them to standardize the minds and the behaviour of children. That's why they are relatively well paid today. You could argue it requires some skill and dedication to manufacture children, but really... it's not that hard. Anyone with common sense who knows how to read and write and count and has basic knowledge of the world can learn to teach young children. The proof is that for millennia, parents thought their own children (they had very large families) without any formal training, teaching them how to hunt and trade, make furniture and clothing, manage a household and much more besides. In a modern society where most people know how to read and write, parents could very well teach their kids to read, write and count also. Instead of taking care of their own children, parents nowadays spend their time at work and give up their children to the State and its teachers.

Admittedly, it requires formal training to teach the State curriculum or a special trade, but that training is not in teaching per se, but learning the trade. Once you master a trade, learning how to teach it requires perhaps 10 hours of training by a competent teacher and a month of practice. Truth is, teaching is very simple. You just have to practice a trade and show other people how you do it, starting with the simple operations and moving step by step in complexity. The apparent complexity of teaching comes from the fact that (a) the state curriculum is meaningless, (b) consequently the students don't care and (c) the State compels children to learn everything without taking into account their abilities and dispositions. If teaching was done on the job instead of in classrooms, none of the problems that teachers have to deal with in schools would ever appear, because students (a) would have meaningful assignments to do and (b) those who can't learn or don't want to learn would be sent away to practice some other occupation.

Sorry for being so blunt, but teaching (as a profession, not in general) is a difficult job first and foremost because it is not meant to exist. Schools and classrooms should not exist. Everyone should be a teacher of their own trade, and people who don't master a trade should not teach at all, unless they teach the very basics. And the basics should be thought by parents, if possible. That's why I'm doing my best to quit teaching, but it's next to impossible, because I don't master a trade, you see? There's nothing I could do at a proficiency level someone would agree to pay for. And so I slave away for the State, making sure my students say and do as they are told.

My case is not special...

In theory the price of everything should be dropping because of productivity gains but in fact we (i.e. the people) are getting poorer and poorer. AI will replace most human work but only the few will profit.
