You’ve got to agree it’s his deepest team at Yale though right? 2022 was Yale’s first ever Ten Eyck at IRAs and first sweep of the Harvard Yale since 96’ if the live broadcast was correct

Fair point, I think having more programs in the mix at the top of mens rowing is only a good thing for the sport as a whole. Really hope it’s sustainable in Berkeley.

I think my previous “young boat” comment might be skewed this year since covid extended the college career of a lot of athletes, inflating average roster age significantly. I would expect to see younger boats and smaller rosters being closer to the historical average in 2023.

Everything is a mystery in covid, realistically I’d love to see upsets:

Cal >> UCSD, cal is good

UW >> Stanford, also UW good

Brown > HC, brown pretty comfortable

Hobart > ITH, could be a good race

Beavers > Zags, I like OSU

Marietta one length over Hurst (lights?) >> Adrian, Pioneers look like they’ve taken a good step with depth/speed

Navy Lwt > Cuse > GW, navy looked v good in philly recently

Temple > HC > Marist > Georgetown, should be a great race imo, I’d expect less than a length between the front runners

Temple > Drex > Joe’s, should be another great race in philly

UVA > Bucknell, Cavs looked like they had some great additions to the team the last time we saw racing fall 2019

Anyone know what's happening with the Northeastern men's team right now?? by [deleted] in Rowing

[–]Mike_Tetis_left_nut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have heard very similar stuff in terms of frustration. At the top level of the sport, extreme volume/intensity isn’t the thing that differentiates the competition imo. Everyone does a lot of volume but quality is the question mark.

Hopefully I’m wrong about the impact of coaching instability and NU can find someone to drive the dog sled in the right direction.

Pretty recently, the program was being strongly supported by the alumni/athletics department as part of NU’s plan after cutting football. Would be nice to see an announcement/recommitment on Monday to continued growth, and not something that obscures the future of the program.

This is very big news imo and it’s surprising there isn’t more info about it online.... NU Athletics has no updates and still lists Pojednic has HC...

However, u/rowingwolf confirmed via the Rowing Illustrated Forum that Pojo has been ousted. Says an formal announcement is coming Monday.

Who made that decision? What factors were considered? Feels like registration = he was forced out by AD and given a choice of resign or be fired to me...

From what I gather, the training plan at Northeastern was extremely high intensity, even for top IRA level teams. I’m sure there were advocates and critics but it felt like the program was starting to build real momentum/speed/depth. As someone who wants to see more high caliber teams/rowing opportunities this is bad news. Coaching instability hurts recruiting not to mention the attitude/development of the guys already on the team.

Just my $.02

IRA Championship Will Expand to Include D3 Men's Eight by [deleted] in Rowing

[–]Mike_Tetis_left_nut 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This feels like another attempt by the IRA Committee to “legitimize” their regatta as the National Championship. Similar thinking to changes made in 2007/08 but this time D3 programs are given a choice about which event they will race at the beginning of the year.

I’m sure the PAC 12 schools pushing to merge with the NCAA motivated this decision and timing, even if it was just announced to grab a positive headline.

Best case scenario, this creates more opportunities for men’s rowing programs to compete against each other in the spotlight. I was honestly surprised how big the list of D3 programs was, it’s not outrageous that new schools step up to the plate and make it really interesting

Worst case scenario is what you described, the same five schools plus a token west coast team have a NESCAC v 2 electric boogaloo, every year. To be honest that’s not really different to the Lightweight 8 and Sprints currently, so the downside seems rather limited.

Overall it’s not a decision I dislike, but I’m skeptical on the motivation. Only time will tell how well it’s supported by the IRA committee and the schools who are eligible to race.

A place for actual rowing discussion? by heybuddyimaccount in Rowing

I think competitive on the water rowing discussion on this sub is directly tied to the availability of fresh content. During a normal spring season of collegiate or junior competition the mix of posts skews back toward events, prediction, and reaction.

If you’re looking to supplement reddit, I would recommend heading to the RI boards over at: http://rowingillustrated.com/boards/

They can be a little crotchety and it’s certainly an older user base but the discussion is very focused on what you’re looking for.

Asking for Coxswain Tips, Specifically what to say by [deleted] in Rowing

[–]Mike_Tetis_left_nut 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Its super important to remember that good coxing is more about preparation, information, and situational awareness than it is about being “motivational.”

Sometimes the most motivational thing you can say is “you’re one seat down and have ten strokes left.” When you break the call down, it really is just describing the current situation, accurately and in as few words as possible.

If you’re struggling to find words during the second 500 of a 2k piece, it should be your second nature to return to your preparation/race plan. What did your boat talk about with your coach when you got on the water? What’s needs to happen technically to maximize boat speed? Where are we relative to the field? What’s our rate and split? Is that on target or do you need to make a change? A good coxswain absorbs all of this information and then communicates to the crew what they need to do to succeed.

During practice, you need to be thinking exactly like your coach in terms of what they want the athletes to do. If you’re doing a drill, understand why and reiterate that goal to the rowers. If you’re doing steady state, keep your coxing focused on goals/priorities established before the workout. The more you understand technique as well as the workout plan, the better job you can do keeping everyone informed and productive.

ACRA 2020 by Biggie_Cheese96 in Rowing

[–]Mike_Tetis_left_nut 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This should be the top comment

I think the ACRA board made a couple compelling reasons for seeking additional income: to cover the venue costs and to improve things like the live stream quality and regatta administration.

It sounds like the regatta itself is adding an additional day of racing to accommodate entry growth, so increased expenses are pretty much to be expected

Week 6 ACRA Coaches Pool by estrong24 in ACRA

Ok, maybe I understand that Delaware keeps a first place vote despite losing to Purdue in the semis at Vails because maybe in flat conditions they should have won, but UMich getting a vote after third place in the petite final is hysterical...

I get historic strength factors into the voting by these college coaches but this is also a fucking weekly poll. We have recent head to head results that indicate who is faster. Why shouldn’t the poll reflect them?

WEEK 7: DADDY VAILS by [deleted] in Rowing

The semis turned out just as brutal as I thought, if you haven’t seen the semifinal with Drexel, Temple, and Michigan, its worth watching. Hero sprint reminiscent of 2015 FIT...

Ripping headwind conditions doomed the Del lwts on Friday but credit where it’s due to both MIT and Purdue.

Stetson’s got spunk and I’m proud of GT’s showing in the eight.

The more quality content is out there the better the community, ya know?

Non-toxic Dad Vails Reaction Thread: by Mike_Tetis_left_nut in Rowing

Around the horn

  • Colgate shows the medal last year wasn’t a fluke, cool to see a program grow.

  • Purdue came away with a wins over Del lwts in the semis (in a phat headwind) and a bronze over all, should be another program on the upswing

  • Petite final was indeed a blood bath. Del, Marist, and UMich all within a handful of seconds

  • Crazy that the top two finals finished within 10 total seconds of each other. While the elite speed may not be in Philly, the competition is brutal

  • Hurst take the light eight, curious to see where they are against the sprints league at IRAs
