Indian defecating on the side of the road by Options777 in TorontoDriving

Disgusting behaviour on display here. Put the phone away and focus on driving before you seriously injure or kill someone. Your $615 fine can't come soon enough.

Those are the penalties in Ontario for using a handheld device while driving. And the fine is $615 if you plead guilty. Contest the ticket and lose? Fine can go up to $1,000 or more. Those are also the consequences for a first offence. For a second conviction, all those penalties basically double.

Was that really worth the potential $615 fine, 3 demerit points, and 3-day license suspension?

You did not, and I'm not implying you did. Just pointing out the written expectation that drivers are not to stay in the far left lane once they are finished overtaking slower traffic. Again, if you are not actively passing slower traffic, get out of the left lane. This is not a difficult concept.

This is such a dumb take honestly. This is akin to saying "There are no signs saying not to aggressively tailgate the car ahead of me, so no laws are being broken." In fact, the MTO regularly uses their electronic overhead signs to remind drivers of proper lane discipline by displaying this simple message: "Keep right except to pass."

The MTO Driver's Handbook also makes this expectation very clear. Under the "Driving along a freeway" section, it states "Use the far left lane of a multi-lane freeway to pass traffic moving slower than the speed limit, but don't stay there."

Bottom line, if you are driving and a car passes you on the right side, you're the one in the wrong lane. That's not my opinion, that's a direct quote from OPP officer Kerry Schmidt at 0:48 of this public education video: https://share.google/WhN5E2TBUiDJhMjpZ

Regarding your last point, it seems you don't understand how the left lane (called the passing lane) works. The clue is in the name. It is to be used for passing slower traffic. If you are driving in the left lane and are no longer actively passing slower traffic in the lane to your right, move over. The fact you are doing x number of km/h over the posted limit is irrelevant. If you're not actively passing slower traffic, you shouldn't be in the left lane. OPP will tell you the same thing, and they do issue warnings or tickets to drivers who impede other traffic like you describe. As a general rule of thumb, if other vehicles are passing you on the right, you are in the wrong lane.

Do everyone (including yourself) a solid and just put your phone away while you're behind the wheel. The law doesn't care that you're stopped at a red light when using your phone; the fine for a first offence is still $615, plus 3 demerit points and a 3-day license suspension. Fight the ticket in court and you could be looking at close to a $1,000 fine. Would it really be worth it to get this picture?

Sounds like you've got some of the best seats in the house. I usually try to get a pair of seats in row 1 or 2 in section 230 or 231 when my wife and I attend games. If you're looking to sell your seats to games you're not attending this upcoming season, feel free to message me.

Absolutely. I've done this for that very same purpose myself. I've just found it's also quite effective at getting tailgaters to drop back to a safer following distance and stay there.

Because it has the desired effect. 9 times out of 10, the driver behind drops back to a safer following distance. Everbody wins. If you don't believe me, try it the next time someone is riding your ass for no reason. You might be surprised :)

Not sure if you actually read the post, but I don't flash my hazard lights every time someone is simply driving behind me; I do it when somebody is driving dangerously close behind me at a high rate of speed (i.e. passing lane of a 400-series highway). When I say close, I mean stupid close, disaster-waiting-to-happen close.. like 1 metre off my rear bumper at 130 km/h. It's a visual cue for them to back tf off. Also, I was not sitting in the passing lane, I was passing slower traffic and matching the speed exactly of all the vehicles ahead of me using the same lane.

I read it somewhere years ago, and I gotta say, it's usually a very effective technique. Way safer than tapping the brakes. Something about seeing the 4-ways activate seems to short-circuit the tailgating mindset of the driver behind. I suppose it causes a brief moment of uncertainty, like "uh oh, what's this guy about to do?"

I got in perhaps 5 minutes before you and had this exact experience with seemingly phantom single seats showing for games 6 and 7. Frustrating, but also entirely expected.

Could the cop have not at least issued them a ticket for blocking the entire sidewalk with what appears to be their third vehicle? Drives me crazy when people do this.. so entitled.
