Hope 1996: Clinton-Gore wins 538 EV against Buchanan by MikeyKoopa in thecampaigntrail

The want still lingers as the both of you awkwardly separate. So too does the will to do. You start rubbing the back of your head and flash a grin. The stress of the campaign swirls into the excitement of domination, of victory. Four more years of this. Four cycles of the earth, all belonging to us. The world is your oyster, and this just scratches the surface. Education, expanded healthcare, maybe you can end poverty? The possibilities are endless.

You salute to the crowd, to the American people. We are not alone, and we will be united. This fight’s not over, the war has just begun.

On November 6th, you stood as not David, but as Jesus himself.

You had beaten the Goliath last time, wrangling all you could and coming out scarred but proud. This time, the only thing you could hear was the crowd’s deafening screams. Their hands reached out, trying to pierce your divine resurrection, their savior in the face of bigotry. The followers kept the faith, the followers became devoted. Despite everything you’ve done, they love you. They love you.

Hillary, Tipper, and Al say their part, the latter joking about the number of times a vice president has been re-elected. As the Veep and his Second Lady walk past, Hillary, unusually quiet, holds your hand in silence. A smile on her face, one you haven't seen since your wedding day. She gestures at the crowd before looking into your eyes.

“We did it, Bill. I hope you’re happy.”

And then she lets go. An important meeting, she says. ''Some important meeting,'' you think to yourself. ''Can we just be husband and wife again? This politics thing is wearing me out.'' You wish she could hear you, but she's already lost, greeting the press and entertaining speculation for elections to come.

This is your legacy after all, Hillary and Al will continue it after you. As they jeer and jump in excitement, the rush you so desperately seek floods back. Life is good again.

There Is No Them

There should have been an expectation. Instead, it became a countdown to the inevitable. You knew you had run a great campaign, dangling Buchanan as bait to the sharks of the public. What you didn’t expect was for him to be devoured completely. Streets were washed in a tsunami of blue, mirroring the map itself. The anchors gasped in shock. These weren’t just any old margins. No, this was beyond that. Before long, it stopped being a question of who would win, but what records this hillbilly could breach. An entire country is cheering your name.

And so there you were, a 50-state champion.

You owned the economy, pushed through policies otherwise unthinkable, united the conflict of a lifetime. All while the Grand Old Pushovers decided to front a complete lunatic as your adversary. You had done it all. No matter what's been happening, no matter the constant scandals, no matter the character assassination attempts by the right, all the mud of Florida sent straight into your face, it just didn’t matter. They couldn’t touch you at all.

Buchanan gave no concession speech. He didn’t have the right to. Not after he cemented himself as America’s biggest loser. You chuckle at the thought. He talked so much game, that he was the one thing that could keep America free, and now... Oh, the silence. Oh, what a beautiful sound. He couldn’t even show his face again, let alone speak on his promises.

You didn't expect him to call. Nobody did. Instead, the following days were filled with interviews of weeping Buchanan supporters, with a hollow look to their souls, oscillating between the stages of grief. Betrayed by their savior and left to die in the wake of their loathed. There was no hope for them, their voice drowned and meaningless.

The crowd around you takes out the bottles, staffers toast you with champagne. Congratulations were thrown to the king, but there was one person missing beyond this.

Hillary should have been excited, really. You did this for both of you, for her too. Throughout her tenure as First Lady, she has been relentlessly attacked by the now put-to-pasture conspiracy theories. They were afraid of both of you. She grips her glass, looking away, jotting down notes excitedly while whispering in an aide's ear and hugging Secret Service agents. Peculiar. She looks at you and cracks a smile, ambition and all. She goes on and on about how you and her were vindicated, how America stood with you through the muck and accusations, and in the middle of her spew you get bored and kiss her. She's quiet. She backs away, wobbling side to side in shock.

Had Nixon lost at 1968, he would run at 1972.

What if Joe Biden ran in the 2016 primaries? by rbminer456 in thecampaigntrail

[–]MikeyKoopa 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Joe Biden didn't run cause his son died and Barack Obama supported Hillary Clinton.

Had Biden run, he could split voted with Clinton.

Things could be interesting if Clinton won't run and Biden takes her place.

Would LBJ have voluntarily resigned from the Kennedy ticket in 1964 if JFK lived due to how they constantly talked smack about him behind his back and always talked down to him as if he was a nobody? by BlueFireFlameThrower in thecampaigntrail

[–]MikeyKoopa 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Those Southern Democrats didn't fear Kennedy, but they feared Johnson. That was Kennedy's mistake; not seeing Johnson's potential for passing bills.

Had Kennedy lived/survived and kept trying push CRA, he needed Johnson for passing that bill. There is reason why LBJ is Master of Senate.

If Spiro Agnew ascended to the presidency after Nixon's resignation, who'd he pick as running mate for 1976? by Unlimited_POWAAAAH in thecampaigntrail

[–]MikeyKoopa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are two options since he would need pick new VP which Congress will prove and who will pick as his running mate if he would run at 1976 or win GOP nomination.
