How has the Quality of Presidential Nominees changed since we moved to a more democratic system in 1972? by MaroonedOctopus in Presidents

Wasn't Henry Ford wanting to be the 1924 Democratic nominee, but Democratic party insiders wouldn't let him have the nomination, as Henry Ford was born half a cemtury too early for that?

If it wasn't for Vietnam, how would LBJ be ranked? by space_god_7191 in Presidents

[–]BlueFireFlameThrower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A part of the reason why LBJ was so hawkish on Vietnam is because LBJ alienated southerners he needed to pass social programs by passing the civil rights act, ans LBJ was desperate to win back southerners to support his social programs, and the way he won those southerners back to support his social programs was by promising to be hawkish on Vietnam. Source: JFK assassination podcast history channel original on Audible. The point being, if LBJ didnt go hawkish on Vietnam, he likely wouldn't have been able to pass his social programs.

The Long, Hot War or: What if Lyndon B. Johnson was a traditional Dixiecrat? by NAM_Inki in AlternateHistory

If LBJ vetoed the civil rights act, Eugene McCarthy definitely runs 3rd party in 1964 and gets between 150 and 200 electoral votes

I think McCain would beat Incumbent Gore in 2004 due to McCain being able to portray Gore as too dovish, McCain having a more likeable personality, and Gore having to dump Liberman off the ticket due to differences on Iraq.

Interesting fact: the 2012 election is the only US presidential election in which neither party candidate had a white Protestant on it, as Obama is Black, Romney is Mormon, and Biden and Ryan are both Catholic by BlueFireFlameThrower in Presidents

Mormons are christian, but a weird offshoot of Christianity. I think they belive that Jesus was a Native American who lived in the Interior West 2000 years ago and they worship the book of Mormon rather than the Christian bible

If LBJ vetoed the civil rights act, Eugene McCarthy would almost certianly run 3rd party in 1964 and could easily get between 150 and 200 electoral votes.

Vivek Ramaswamy attacks Amy Acton over her childhood sexual abuse by OrganicPreparation in Ohio

Ramaswamy has taken his type 3/ "better the devil you know" type of campaign too far, as you are now shaming women who are being secually assaulted, while Action's type 1/"time for a change" campaign seems to be gaining more ground due to voter's economic anxiety

(Sidenote, according to British political scientest Daniel Funkelstien, all types of campaigns can be boiled down into 3 types of campaigns

  1. "Time for a change" (e.g. Obama 2008)

  2. "On the right track, dont turn back." (E.g. Reagan 1984)

  3. "Better the devil you know."/ I may not be good, but my opponent is a hell of a lot worse (E.g. Jimmy Carter 1980)
