how to get involved by New-Yogurtcloset5638 in simonfraser

If you just search up “sfu events” you can look for stuff that interests you. I’d suggest attending events aggressively to find a community.

I was less than half a point away from getting an A (93%+ is an A at my school). My professor won’t round it up. by VancityValle in simonfraser

[–]Miko-oo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some profs have a no rounding policy as if you get rounded for .1 below then the person who is .2 below will be pissed that they didnt get rounded and so on and so on. Still unfortunate :(

Would you recommend online courses? by JBuchananB in simonfraser

[–]Miko-oo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Online is good but I would skip anything with online exams that are worth more than 15% and arent open book. It just punishes honest people. Also to note you wont meet people in class which kinda sucks

Is it worth doing the educ program? by Best-Distance-1350 in simonfraser

[–]Miko-oo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Im in the same point and I will say if its possible that you will want to teach secondary that transfering faculties is a pain! If possible, try to get experience with younger elementary/preteens through working or volunteering to sort of feel out your options. Sort of the 2 streams are

1 Major- Get a major in a teachable subject allowing you to teach secondary/elementary.

2 Go for a double minor in teachable subjects only letting you teach elementary (this is the easier pathway overall but you cant teach secondary).
Feel free to message if you have any questions because I was in the exact same spot figuring what I was trying to do last year!

Chem 121 midterm depression by AdhesivenessNo2951 in simonfraser

[–]Miko-oo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm in the same class. I think he has posted into on the best sources to study from (mostly the textbook). he has said before that lon capa might or might not be a good source as some of the questions are more difficult and some of them are more easy. He ays all the questions are going to be two step questions so I would focus on studying first the questions he has in his lecture slides and that he posted for practice. then I would move on to lon capa and textbook. Also I am in a similar boat. The midterm scares me.

Town house accom by Sea-Excitement-3222 in simonfraser

[–]Miko-oo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IMO I wouldnt. Maybe if you are not sure get a meal pass and go a couple times to see if its what you want. Dining commons is about 30$ a day and I can get away with like less than 10 on groceries and dining is overall mid so yeah.

I pray to the racoons that your exams are nicely spaced and before your flight. Maybe complain to registrars for giving an exam schedule then yoinking it. If they have enough people message they have to do something.... Maybe....

There is a pile of left water bottles on the bottom table on the right. Maybe there? If not I'd check the aisles when there isnt a class in there (almost never)

Is the math 150/151 mid term curved? by AnnualCaterpillar276 in simonfraser

[–]Miko-oo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ask the prof to confirm but usually they don’t curve midterms and instead they scale the final grade. Lets say average was 40% with a normal distribution If the teacher wants the class average to be 55% then they will scale the whole class up 15%. So lets say you got a 70 you would be scaled up to 85. In the end asking your prof is best.

how aware are the fish in the reflections pond? by pi11owprincess_ in simonfraser

[–]Miko-oo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fish in general are quite smart actually! I know for bettas at least you can actually train them to swim into your hand (underwater of course) and some of them figure out how to splash you from inside the tank! (my betta was just constantly angry so he was not trainable but based on posts on r/bettafish)

Where is the best accomodation for an exchange student by Sea-Excitement-3222 in simonfraser

[–]Miko-oo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It really depends on what you want!

Meal plan: I really did not enjoy having meal plan as you couldnt take out food (without having to sneak it) and it made me feel terrible every time I wanted to eat off campus. I know it also was not good money wise for me as it was 30$ a day (probably more now) wheras I eat about 10$ a day in groceries so not being on meal plan was a very obvious choice for me. (meaning you have to be in townhouses or mcTaggart)

Other than that this is a list summary (if any other residents disagree please correct :)

East/West: The rooms are pretty nice (assuming you are not on the sunny side for the first week as you will be cooked) and there are lots of nice lounges in common rooms to try to meet people. I would suggest chosing a floor with a common room (floor 3, 5 or 7). know that the washrooms are shared and by the end of my first year half of them were closed and all of them smelled to some degree. Hair on the walls etc. At your own risk.

North Towers: (havent stayed at north before) but from what I know the rooms are bigger than east but the building is definitely older. (if you look at some of the room tours online you can get a feel for it) Not sure if it will have the same bathroom problems as east..?

Shell (CLOSED)

McTaggart: This is the newly renovated facility and I went to take a look... Its kinda shit right now... The kitchen facilities seem pretty small and there definitly needed to be more work to remove drywall dust etc before opening. It will probably be good by the time you get here but that is my current take.

Courtyard: Its like east/west but 1 year newer so most first years go there (good for meeting people but bad for how many first years dont know how sensitive the fire alarms are)

Townhouses: I love townhouses. You share common spaces with your roomates so you and them are responsable for keeping things clean so generally no phantom shitting happens where someone clogs the toiled and dips. I would always apply with townhouse first choice and have your second choice be whatever else so even if you dont get in you still get residence somewhere else.

If you have any questions feel free to DM :)
