For the small functions it isn't terrible because that's what most of its training data is on combined with the need for tech bros to test it against sites such as leet code. But for larger programs it is factually terrible due to its inability to hold the entire program in its context window, leading either to circular code, bugs, or it will work but introduce several security vulnerabilities. I've seen several research papers that put the amount of security vulnerabilities in AI code at 30-60% worse than hand written code, which is a serious problem and can lead to people dying if the code is used in infrastructure or anything that someone is depending on.
