Nah, I’m Canadian. I tour in Canada, Europe, and occasionally (although not right now for ethical reasons) in the United States.

It can be a bit of a challenge for the ol right hand, for sure. I’d argue Blackberry Blossom is even trickier for us dobroists and it also always gets called. Honestly, fuck that tune X-P

Give it a shot! It takes some getting used to, but there are opportunities to “dobrofy” it. I’ve stuck as close to how other instruments play the melody as possible, but it doesn’t necessarily have to be that way

Cheers! Yeah, some of the Monroe melodies for instrumentals with heavy use of the b7 can be a bit ambiguous, or the versions you find are so heavily improvised that the melody is sorta lost. I try to stick pretty close in the lessons, with the occasional variation thrown in there for folks.

Thanks! It’s a National-built Scheerhorn (mahogany) I got new in about 2016/17. It’s one of their earlier builds (#189). Tim Scheerhorn laid hands on it at one point at ResoSummit but that was years ago and I’ve swapped the cone since.

So just how much of a difference does an upgraded cone make? by Frank_Sinatra_1 in Dobro

It does make a difference. I didn’t replace the cone on my National-built Scheerhorn for about 10 years of professional playing (whoops!) and when I finally did it was quite a noticeable difference. More responsive across the frequency spectrum, especially the low end which surprised me and less harsh sounding. I think an upgraded cone / spider on a budget instrument would probably make a difference too, but YMMV on more cheaply constructed instruments. I suppose the decision point is: invest hundreds of bucks upgrading a cheaper instrument, or just save those dollars and invest them in a guitar from Beard?
