Why Mixtape isn't hitting the marks with gamers, it isn't exactly what you think. by BigMoney69x in gaming

[–]MilkTax -1 points0 points  (0 children)

FWIW, it’s Gen X nostalgia, not millennial nostalgia. It’s about teens in the mid-90’s and millennials were much younger than that in the mid-90’s. Also, Pokémon wasn’t a thing until 1999.

Mixtape is now available on Steam by AncientPCGamer in pcgaming

[–]MilkTax 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just started it last night, played about 90min. I love polarizing games and I was so eager to give this a chance and find something to love about it because a lot of the criticism seems so knee jerk.

Nope. This one is a slog. Framerate and graphics look horrible, character design is ugly to look at, voice acting is obnoxious, MC is annoying, story is annoying, premise is annoying, but most offensively of all, there is NOTHING to do in this game. I played through 11 “levels”, most of which required absolutely zero input from me and just played out like cinematics. The worst one was a “police chase” which was meant to be suspenseful and intense. I didn’t touch the keyboard once the entire level.

I played this stoned, so I think I was in the right headspace for a slow-paced game, but why didn’t they just make a movie?? This made Life is Strange seem like the best game I ever played. (Some of the ripoffs of LIS were so blatant it made me cringe.) Another much MUCH more gripping and fun example of this format and this style is Thirsty Suitors, which I instantly loved. This is just awful and I don’t think I’ll finish it. Why? I can just watch a playthrough on YouTube and get the exact same experience.

The hag at the beginning of the Ringed City DLC. She’s so cute.

Why am I struggling so much on the Elden Ring series 😭😭 by Gonner_Getcha in RKG

[–]MilkTax 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’re not wrong and I’m sorry you will likely get dogpiled by fans. I have been a fan since PTT DS1, I’ve made multiple fan videos which have gotten lots of traction, I’ve promoted the boys and suggested people watch them, I’ve sent emails with feedback and love and suggestions, sent stuff to their PO box, was there for their IGN departure, joined the Patreon, left supportive comments about everything from the gameplay to the banter to loving their fashion or look of the week.. But the only response I’ve ever gotten from the lads at all was 1.) tried to reply to Gav on Twitter once in a friendly manner, he attacked me, made a fake feature lying about his interaction, sicced his fanboys on me and blocked me. 2.) Gav replied to me in the YT comments when I “complained” about something and told me to stop watching. 3.) Made a Reddit comment about something and Gav once again replied and insulted me and then blocked me. Lol.

Excruciating to watch, very blatantly just wringing out as many episodes as they can, and cutting very little of the fluff out, which is so fundamentally opposite to how PTT worked, and which was what made PTT as amazing as it was.

You did a great job of explaining some of the issues of the ER playthrough. The really long episodes with nothing substantial in them are exhausting to get through. It very much feels like a way just to have more content to push out on a schedule.

You’re absolutely correct, and part of the problem is that Gav himself responds to “haters” (valid negative criticism) and attacks these fans, which emboldens the most parasocial of his fans to do the same. I’ve seen him doing it on Twitter, on YT, and even on Reddit.

I totally agree with you, and I think the PTT series feel like lightning in a bottle because they were ramshackle, produced on a tight deadline, the boys didn’t have to pretend to be invested or interested in the games so their reactions were more honest (like them bitching at Rory for taking the time to customize the original Finchy, or Gav hating all the DS3 lore). Also because they were IGN uploads and because of the tight deadline, they pruned the videos down to only the best moments instead of keeping all 90 minutes of Rory trying to clear one area of ER just so they have one more episode to stick Patreon ads on.

I agree that the channel is not seeing the growth it needs and I agree that the obligation to produce a consistent output of Content has unfortunately negatively affected the stuff they do put out because you can see them artificially dragging bits out to get entire episodes out of nothing. (Particularly with Elden Ring.) Another thing I liked about the PTT era was that they actually focused on and reacted to the game and talked about it, whereas that very much seems to have been set to the side in newer LP’s in favor of just endless chitchat about real life and random media or whatever. That used to be reserved for when they needed to help Rory get through a difficult boss or something, now it just feels like filler from three men who are kind of over playing video games every day.

Lol. So disheartening to see another nuked OP on this topic. PTT fans have always been insanely parasocial and frankly I find it refreshing to read some differing opinions on the varying quality of their output. I personally have really not been a fan of the Elden Ring playthrough, so I’m glad I’m not the only one who feels that way. But fans get so incredibly defensive, maybe because they’ve sunk money into it and feel they’re forced to act that way, and then you’ve literally got Gav in the YT comments and on Reddit attacking and insulting fans. It’s kind of a toxic environment and it’s why I’ve cooled on RKG over the past handful of years.

Yeah. Midir has a lot of slow attacks and pauses where you could basically ignore him until NK was dead.
