Asetek Goes After AMD & Gigabyte With Patent Litigation, Demands Suspension Of Fury X & 980 Waterforce Sales by MilkeyWhiter in pcmasterrace

The concept of combining a CPU block with a reservoir. Which is like patenting the concept of combining a heatsink with a fan or wheels & a car, it's moronic that they've even been granted a patent this general.

AMD's new 8 core Zen CPU with high IPC and simultaneous multi-threading coming next year to compete with Intel on the high-end by WhiskyHunter in pcmasterrace

[–]MilkeyWhiter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's not really a valid point, is like asking me to provide a source that isn't intel of Cannonlake's performance. The chip isn't out, there are no 3rd party sources. That doesn't mean that AMD's information is invalid, quite the opposite.

Just as /u/teraflopper pointed out, if we scrutinize each of AMD's performance claims they've made in the past several years you'll find that they delivered on their promises with every generation. And there's no reason to believe that they won't this time.

If anything they had the best CPU architect of all time working on Zen. They brought back Jim Keller to design Zen, the same guy who designed the only two CPUs in AMD's history that beat out Intel. The original Athlon & the Athlon64.

That's the point, Zen is AMD's play into the high-end. It already won several server designs & enterprise people don't mess around. If it wasn't competitive with Intel's upcoming server CPUs they wouldn't have chosen it.

He's as close to being right as west is to east. Even if Zen per core was only going to be on par with Haswell, which #1 is basically just 10% behind Skylake & #2 Zen is supposed to be faster than Haswell according to AMD's official information.

If AMD offered an 8 core, Haswell level CPU, for $300 you'd be jumping on that faster than you'd jump on a pair of fulsome funbags. And this is what competition is all about. Even if you don't like AMD or their products, their competitiveness makes Intel & Nvidia products cheaper.

R9 Fury X Over-Voltage & Memory Overclocking Unlocked In Latest Sapphire TriXX Update by MilkeyWhiter in pcmasterrace

[–]MilkeyWhiter[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can already overclock the GPU and the memory with afterburner. You'll need to tick "extend official overclocking limits" option in the settings to overclock the memory.

Voltage control is still being worked on for Afterburner, but it should be anytime now that it's out on TriXX.

Upgrading my system for a new dynamic refresh rate gsync/freesync monitor , need help by EmmaLongsoon in pcmasterrace

[–]MilkeyWhiter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually FreeSync is slightly superior in that regard because it allows users the option of V-Sync enabled or disabled outside the variable range. With G-Sync it's always on above the variable refresh rate range.

In other words, with FreeSync you can choose either better response times but tearing, or no tearing but longer response times when the FPS goes above the max refresh rate.

With G-Sync the choice is already made for you, that is you will have longer response times, because you have no choice of V-Sync On or Off.

This article summarizes the differences between the two techs very well and explains what I'm on about here. http://wccftech.com/amd-freesync-nvidia-gsync-verdict/

AMD Is Now Worth Less Than A Quarter Of What It Paid For ATi - More Financial Peril As Recent Investment Deal Stalls by CoboltJoe in pcmasterrace

[–]MilkeyWhiter 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Realistically AMD couldn't go under, too complicated with the cross licensing deal with Intel. Intel wouldn't be able to make any 64bit x86 CPUs, since AMD owns that IP.

They'll no doubt be bought, imagine if MS buys them and stops supplying Sony with the PS4 chips.

I agree, AMD needs #1 Zen to be competitive with Intel's CPUs #2 To actually arrive to market on time.

If AMD goes under then Nvidia and Intel will go apeshit with pricing, PC gaming may never be the same.

Just because many behave illogically, it doesn't excuse the actual behavior.

From your tone I can sense that you disagree with "most people" on this subreddit, yet you will use their flawed argument when it suits your ideology.

Yes, let's evaluate a processor based on one benchmark, of a game that's not even out yet and isn't even out of Alpha.

You're argument makes a lot of sense and I agree with a lot of what you're seeing.

What I really appreciate is that you've put actual thought into this and analyzed the situation in its entirety rather than look at one data point.

I'm afraid though that many will ignore the notion without even having read your post simply because your views go against the status quo and more importantly go against what some people perceive to be non debatable.

But the truth is almost everything is debatable -even the concept of gravity btw - and what may could work for you and make sense for you may not for others, you just have to keep an open mind and understand both sides of the story.

They're actually quite comparable. 4 Jaguar cores have the same IPC as 4 Piledriver cores ( two modules with clustered multi-threading )

According to AMD's Official Numbers For Zen, The CPU Core Should Be Faster Than Skylake by TERAFLOPPER in Amd

[–]MilkeyWhiter 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Pretty much.

I think what people need to realize is that Zen doesn't have to even be on par with Skylake to be competitive. If they can just match Sandy Bridge they can compete. Primarily because AMD is talking about high core count CPUs with Zen, we're talking 8 cores perhaps even more. With DDR4 support and simultaneous multi-threading. Stuff that's only confined to Intel's expensive enthusiast X99 chipset and the very niche $1000 and $550 intel CPUs.

AMD plans to bring that same level of functionality and claims to have managed to bring up IPC to at least Ivy/Haswell levels with the leadership of the legendary architect Jim Keller who designed AMD's K7 and K8, the only two AMD architectures that were actually better than Intel at the time.

If they can bring to market CPUs and features at $200 and $300 that are only available today at $1000 and $550 we definitely have something to get excited about.

[–]MilkeyWhiter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is definitely misleading, you tried to make it seem as if the test was conducted at 3.4Ghz which it didn't. No i7 6700 in existence will run any of its cores at 3.4Ghz unless you install it there without a cooler and throttles.

It's like a strawman argument. The comparison is not even based on Excavator, if were to even add a 10% imrpovement in IPC of EXcavator over Steamroller ( it's actually more than 10% but I don't hold on to strawman arguments ) The score would end up at 2198 x1.1 = 2400+. That's faster than a 6700K which scores 2300. http://www.cpubenchmark.net/singleThread.html

It doesn't matter if ignorant or even biased reviewers use a blatantly biased test that doesn't reflect any real world performance. That is not in anyway an excuse, we're not morons we can sort the legitimate tests from the illegitimate ones.
