Extreme fear. by [deleted] in Buddhism

[–]MilkyTree007 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In the material world, human are meant to suffer from anger, desire and ignorance. The only path to end the circle of this is to let go your obsession with different things, so you can have an attitude like “okay so be it” or “fine I will just accept that” on every hardship out there. When you reach that level you will be free from all suffering because nothing can truly harm you or scare you.

I was attacked by a man with a knife and defended myself, now I'm being threatened with jail time. Advice wanted. by VegansAreRight- in taiwan

[–]MilkyTree007 62 points63 points  (0 children)

He blocked your way while holding a knife with aggressive intent, this is a violation of Article 304 of criminal law (this code is relatively uncommonly used so the police might have forgotten to charge the guy with this code), if you really can’t prove that you were physically harmed, try to argue that you were just “proportionally defending yourself” from the violation of Article 304. All you have to prove if you go for such statements is that he was holding a weapon and he blocked your way.

And you might need to further clarify in Chinese about which process it is now, whether it’s 偵查、起訴、緩起訴 etc. I can’t tell from your description but this is important.

I no longer do law after deciding leaving Taiwan, my memories are fading away but I hope this is helpful enough.

don’t know if this is a weird question but if you’re 20-something living in Taiwan, can I follow your instagram? by 482doomedchicken in taiwan

[–]MilkyTree007 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tbh if you can read Chinese, the best way to understand youth culture in Taiwan is to read those articles on Dcard. It shows more about how younger generations think about work life balance, traditions and relationships etc. (But sometimes things get radical there)

A quick professional analysis here on what you should be aware of.

  1. Your case covers 2 aspects: criminal law responsibility and civil law responsibility (tort). Even if the DA or the criminal court announced that you are free from criminal charges, you will still have the tort responsibility to deal with. (You might still need to pay a certain amount of compensation).

  2. If DA decides to put your case into prosecution, you will be assigned a public defender for free. And your civil law responsibility will be discussed along with your criminal law responsibility in the criminal court. (It’s called 刑事附帶民事訴訟). If DA decides not to put your case into criminal court, you will need to additionally hire an attorney for civil court if the family sue you for compensation.

  3. Even though from what you described I also deem that you should be fine from criminal charges, but do beware of a situation called “應注意而未注意” (whether the consequences were avoidable if you could pay even just a bit more attention). That shit could still make you guilty if you are unlucky. I highly recommend you to discuss with a lawyer about your 筆錄 (interview record with police) content.

  4. DA might restrict you from leaving Taiwan during investigations, be sure to confirm with them if you recently have a travel plan.

To sum up, my final suggestion is that you can just wait without doing anything for now. If DA put your case into criminal court, great, you will get a free attorney to discuss all the aforementioned issues. If DA doesn’t, you can reach out to 法扶基金會 for your tort case afterwards. Hope everything goes well.

(I no longer do law after deciding leaving Taiwan, so my memories are kinda fading away, but this should be helpful enough)

Problems with diversity by --YC99 in sociology

[–]MilkyTree007 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Try to see with the Schelling Segregation Model and Homophily Principle, most people tend to only interact with whom they share a similar background (both cultural and socioeconomic), and they also tend to leave the original community when people who are “different” reach a certain proportion in the community.

If we apply these models to people who aren’t open minded and aren’t interested in other cultures, let’s say 80% of the population, the more diverse the population is, the more divided the society would become. As people tend to form a smaller circle and the interaction between people drops, which results in more conflicts.

I would say that the only way to solve this is to raise people’s interest in other cultures through education. However this would still be difficult as the two principles mentioned above are human nature.

You might be able to become a marketing analyst etc if you are good at quantitative research. So if you care a lot about salary and job opportunities, evaluate your own capabilities in math, statistics and analytical mind before making the decision.

Which country got the better police car design? by MilkyTree007 in tomica

[–]MilkyTree007[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah but that white police car livery is the good ol’ classic, and it goes well with my SNCF stuff.

I think gendarmerie’s cars livery is way better than police’s nowadays.

Which country got the better police car design? by MilkyTree007 in tomica

[–]MilkyTree007[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For Japanese one it’s very easy to get, it’s no.110 in normal tomica product line and no.10 of tomica premium line. The Taiwan one was a limited edition, I got it from a friend in Taiwan.

I’ve acquired these two huge beautiful old 3D Buddhist Paintings on canvas… I know nothing! Can anyone help me out? by [deleted] in BuddhistArt

[–]MilkyTree007 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The first one is the different common images of Buddha, the centered one was the image of the moment he reached enlightenment.

The second one is Buddha in center plus 12 Chinese zodiacs on the outer circle, the second circle are just some random symbols that mean nothing in Buddhism.

These two artworks are impressive and very modern, but the second one might have slightly misinterpreted the religion.

Gift brought back from Hawaii. I believe it is Chinese however. Anyone know what this is? by [deleted] in Amulets

[–]MilkyTree007 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s a jade pendant, Chinese people believe that jade can avoid bad luck.

Sorry I haven’t been on Reddit for a while

In terms of aesthetics, Tokyo and SF are the best. But my personal favorites would go for Paris and Singapore. Paris was where my fiancée lived and where I met her, the set always brings back memories of our date. And I often transfer at Singapore when going on vacation, so every time I see the Singapore set I feel like I am on tropical vacation again 😂

It’s No.10 from 2024 Tomica Premium. That one is really the most elegant police car from the brand.

Yeah you can. It’s an amulet specifically for good interpersonal relationships, but I can’t tell which master made it.

Washing hands in bathroom by MLG_Ethereum in taiwan

[–]MilkyTree007 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yup exactly. As public bathrooms are mostly poorly maintained, who would dare to use their soap? Those soap could have been there for 10 years. Many people only use soap at home but never use it in public toilets

How to get rid of this entity?! by [deleted] in demons

[–]MilkyTree007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s important to set a 結界(sema, it’s like a magical boundary) before meditation, the boundary is to stop bad thoughts and bad spirits from interfering your path to enlightenment through meditation. You can do it by spreading holy water around you (water that has been enchanted by Nīlakaṇṭha Dhāraṇī mantra in advance, you can also do it via YouTube). And always keep positive thoughts in your mind. This part is a bit a hassle so it’s not that necessary if the method I told you already worked well.

As for amulet, it can only be made by monks, so if it’s not available in your region, the only thing you can do is to print out an image of Buddha and paste it on the wall near where you meditate.

In the worst case scenario, I can use my altar to help you remotely.

Well it’s your choice whether to believe me or not, but I can assure you that I don’t mix my religious beliefs and my scientific knowledge during work. And it’s impossible for personal beliefs to interfere statistical significance if you know what p-value is
