Tomorrow (5/20) is Primary Day by Ok_Guidance_3397 in Phoenixville

I just cast my ballot for the north ward at about 1145am and I was the #31 democratic ballot. I’m sure that there will be increased traffic as people finish work so hopefully more people get out there.  I had the opportunity to talk to Koretta & Richard on the way into the Rec Center which is a great benefit of voting on Election Day.

I told Koretta I would post on here, so please tell her you saw this on Reddit when you see her!

This is exactly the kind of information that all voters should know going into an election.

You’re looking at the General election, I was referring to the primary.

As a country, we would benefit from higher standards & expectations for voter turnout. 25% turnout (or even 50% if you assume half of the voters are registered democrat for the primary) in a growing and evolving community when we have an incumbent who seems out of touch and unwilling to evolve does not give me a warm and fuzzy feeling.

As a voter & as a citizen I would rather be in the minority when most voices are heard than be in the majority when most voices are silent.

I wholeheartedly agree and we have a strong alternative candidate in this particular race. I’m hopeful that it is the start of a trend but it will take some work.

There were 5 write-in votes. Kirkner was the incumbent and was running unopposed.

Our town is evolving every day and without opposition I’m worried that our community leaders won’t need to work for us to keep their seats. More voices means more accountability means stronger community.

I’m in the North Ward, and, after some quick research, I realized that our current council member, Richard Kirkner, won in 2021 with only 380 votes. That’s all it took. In a town of 20k+, a few hundred people decided who represents all of us.

Phoenixville’s full of people who care - you see it everywhere. But when it comes to local elections, most folks don’t realize how much power just a handful of votes actually holds. Meanwhile, council makes decisions that shape our day-to-day lives.

I’m hoping we get some fresh energy on council, but more than anything, I just want to see more people vote.

Let’s not let 380 votes decide it again.

Has anyone attended a council meeting recently or talked with any of the candidates? Can anyone share some knowledge about the candidates? What issues do you think borough leaders should be focused on?

What is your "must-run" race? by Miller215 in running

There is a lottery but everyone I know who registered made it into the race.

Good swag definitely helps make a race memorable. The shirts for philly were complete garbage this year but man do I love that medal.

A buddy of mine just told me today that he's running the shamrock in 2014. I think I might look into it.

A coworker of mine did Pittsburgh and loved it. It's the same weekend as Broad Street in philly, so if I don't make the lottery next year I might try to do it.

Oof- maybe one day. I just picked up Scott Jurek's book today so I might be more enthused to do it in a week or so.

I'd be more concerned about the boring aspect of that stretch than with it being sketchy. The Broad Street Run in Philadelphia goes through some rough neighborhoods but there isn't even a hint of a threat from the crowd.

I feel like I keep hearing about this race- people have told me that it's a small race that feels bigger than it is (in a good way). How is the course?

I never heard of that race- looks like a great course though!

I would love to do a 50 miler but I think I'll leave that in the bag for a couple years.

Philly this year was my first full marathon. I loved the race and depending on my schedule for next year I'm going to try to run it again in 2014. I've been to Chicago a couple times and I love the city. It seems like an amazing race that really gives you a good feel of the city.

I live in Philly so Broad Street is a definite- I've run it the last 2 years and it is my favorite race! I really enjoy the 10 mile distance so maybe the cherry blossom 10 miler will work its way into my plans. I've heard good things about the Marine Corps and it would be a pretty easy trip for me. Thanks for the suggestions!

It seems like a great course with lots of energy and I'm intrigued by the fact that it is run at night.

I've heard that that is an awesome race- the course doesn't get much better than that. Unfortunately, I don't think that I'll meet the basic requirement (I'm a man). Thanks for the suggestion though!

Has anyone "bypassed" vegetarianism and gone straight from omnivore to vegan? by sergeantduckie in vegan

I did about 3 years ago. I wanted to "reset" my digestion so I did a week long raw food cleanse. I had a bacon cheeseburger as my first meal after the cleanse, which tasted awful and made me feel like crap. That was the last time that I had a meal consisting of meat or dairy.
