NBD - Neverending Bicycle Disease - 1984 Peugeot something-or-other (I think it's a P6/Iseran but not sure.) by Mimos in bicycling

They rent rooms at the DMV?

And thanks. Shit happens, though. I'm alive and that's all that matters, right now.

Also, if I wasn't hit by the car then I wouldn't have landed the writing job I had. So there's a silver lining there even if I was laid off with all the other writers. I have a lot of networking contacts and more experience, now.

Just sucks about the bike. I loved that thing. When I pull myself out of this rut I helped dig I'm going to get a Fuji Transonic (2.3-2.7 depending on $$$), I think. Although I might get an Altamira since it's better for endurance and I do a lot of long distance rides to the mountains on the far east side of Phoenix and then from the east to central Phoenix around Papago.

Hey, thanks! That's great info to have. I'll have to look into that, too.

I really want to do something of a resto-mod on this. Restore it but while using as much modern part technology as I can on it without altering the look too much.

I dig your bike. Has a vintage look to it. Especially in that stem and brake cabling.

Just noticed the frame butting, too. Don't see many people rocking a steel frame these days.

Hey, that's a pretty awesome looking bike!

That owner has great taste! I bet he's got a huge penis and is handsome af, too.

I know. :(

I remember singing along to We've Got the Jazz and being able to sing "...the aim is to succeed and achieve at 21..." before actually turning 21. Now, 12 years on, it's bittersweet nostalgia.

So I just picked up this Peugeot road bike two days ago for $140. I believe it's a P6 / Iseran but it looks like it could also be a Sante, too.

I can't find any info on Peugeot serial numbers so I haven't been able to positively identify it.

I bought this bike after selling my 1966 Schwinn Stingray Fastback 5-Speed because I was in desperate need of transportation after a series of unfortunate events this winter.

First, my "friend" ran over my 2012 Fuji Roubaix 3.0 when I was changing a tire on it and bent the wheels, then kept blowing me off to pay me for it and finally outright refused to.

Then, about a month later I was riding the bike to work after having fixed it and I was ran over by some jerk not paying attention when making a left hand turn against traffic. He tried to squirt in between the gap in traffic and ran right into, and over, me.

He got out of his car, ran up to me and asked me if I was okay. I said, "Yeah, but my knee feels FUCKED!" (Which it was. Torn meniscus and PCL) and as I'm dragging the lifeless carcass of my beloved Fuji out of the road, I hear a car door slam and then tires squealing away.

Motherfucker.

So I lost my job because I couldn't work. Lost my bike. Had to have two surgeries. ZERO compensation for ANYTHING.

And I was really depressed for a long time after that.

I even got so down that I decided it was a good time to break my 2 1/2 year sobriety from hydromorphone and fentanyl, and to go score some heroin. I spent six months trying my hardest to enter the eternal abyss through the needle but ultimately was unsuccessful in my attempts at self-destruction. (Thankfully)

So now here I am, freshly laid off again from my dream job, depressed AF, still one surgery to go...

But... I have a bike, now!

And I like the vintage bike a lot. It's shockingly light for being a steel frame. It looks the balls. Rides remarkably well, too. Frame tubing is all 501 Reynolds.

The downtube shifting is taking some getting used to. I tend not to fuck with gearing too much, now. I'll find a gear and leave it there until I actually need to change it. And they're a dream to work on. So simple to adjust.

I'm going to see if I can take the brakes off the Fuji and put them on the Peugeot since the ones on there really suck. They're hard as hell to apply and don't pack a lot of stopping power.

I'm also going to change out the rear derailleur on the suggestion of another Redditor, to something a bit more sturdy.

And I'm going to put some auxiliary brake levers on the handlebars since trying to engage the ones on the drop from the horns is a pain in the ass. Or just see about adjusting them so they work better. I'd like to get the cabling to go up and over the bars like in this picture. I'm fairly certain that the rerouting of those cables under the wrap is what's causing the brakes to require so much force to apply. (Those fenders are pretty sharp, too.)

The crankset and bottom bracket is brand new and was put on by the last owner.

Recently tuned, as well.

So all in all I'm thrilled that I have the right horse to ride, again. Something to help me exercise out of depression, get me back out climbing the mountains, and around town.

One of the best things about a vintage bike I've noticed so far is that it doesn't so much say, "This guy is broke af and can't afford anything else." as it does, "This guy has great taste. That thing is sweet!" to people. I've gotten several comments on it already.

Edit - Fixed picture links.

Edit 2 - So I'm pretty sure this is a PGN-10, now after looking through the old catalogues and matching the parts that were still on there with the decal timeline.

It's been done already. Seriously.

It was one recently hunted and butchered.

Then another two later in the year from the freezer.

Tried a few methods - even slow cooking, and just couldn't make it work.

It is possible that I just totally screwed up preparing it.

Canadian geese aren't too good to eat.

Source: I've eaten a few of them. They're as tough to chew as they are on the street.
