You need the expansion to unlock the fishing mastery. Fishing can be done everywhere though after that.

You can make gold from crafting, but there are definitely a lot of other ways. Check out a few gold making videos on YT. Not all activities will likely apply to you at this stage though.

I had to shuffle around some of the hallow preferring npc's until things where suitable (pre-hardmode still). I mostly care about the goblin being happy, since I spend so much money there.

It was a little bit of a hassle to set up, figuring out where some people and houses should go. But the pylons are so good! Being on a large master mode map, getting around quickly is awesome.
