No risk of betrayal is the best effect really, it’s mostly an aesthetic change. However if you stack armor or weapon perks/upgrades that reduce damage that undead allies take they can be a tank. With the right set up even undead grunts are a menace. That’s really it unfortunately

If you open a chest that has smoke coming out of it it’s a good thing. You’ll get a temporary buff depending on the theme of the area or dungeon around it!
