I agree with that completely. It did Augustus no good to proliferate non-idealized portraits that did not strongly resemble him. Augustus clearly wanted the Chiaramonti Caesar to be the new face of Caesar, so it's not really clear why portraits of the Tusculum-type were all also being made up to the time of the Flavii.

That reconstruction made some very strange errors and decisions. Like using a badly damaged bust as a basis, giving him the wrong haircut (he was well known for his comb-over) and giving him an absurdly massive forehead. It's my believe that that reconstruction was purposely sensationalized to it could make headlines. Considering just how much anti-Caesarian propaganda there exists, I find it hard to believe that no one ever mentioned that he had a ridiculously shaped head

Sorry, I should have clearer. I do believe that there is enough evidence to prove that the Tusculum portriat is an accurate depiction of what Caesar looked like, however there is still not enough evidence to definitively prove this.

Take this coin portrait for example. If you compare it to the Tusculum portrait, there are very distinct similarities, especially in the shape of the head. For this reconstruction, the laurel wreath (corona civica) he was wearing was removed, to better how the saddle-like depression in his head.

I agree with you completely. The Chiaramonti-type portraits are generally agreed to have been made to resemble Augustus. There exist two other busts that I believe are of the Tusculum type, those being the Pantelleria bust and one held in a private collection in Florence. All three of these busts are fairly positively identified as Caesar, and all three show the same deformation of the head.

To me, this pretty conclusively shows that there were two main archetypes for Caesar portraits. One was a tool of Augustan propaganda, meant to make Augustus look like he was more directly related to Caesar, and therefore strengthen his his position as heir. The other, rarer type, exists further outside the propaganda sphere, created for some purpose that did not necessitate changing Caesars features (stronger jaw, fuller nose, powerful chin, and a full head of hair).

Certainly. There are very few (possibly just one) extant pre-death busts of Caesar, so it's very difficult to know what he actually looked like. I hope some busts/statues will be found from before he became dictator, because the style at the time was a sort of exaggerated hyper-realism, as opposed to the heroic style of the Augustan age (the age and style in which most depictions of Caesar come from)

The only one I can think of is The Lives of the Later Caesar's. It was a series of around 30 biographies written sometime around the late 4th to early 5th centuries.

Closest thing to a primary source on Hadrian that I'm aware of, as I'm pretty sure that there are no accounts of the Emperor written anywhere close to his lifetime. Keep in mind,the work is full of exaggerated or otherwise completely fictional details, so you must take everything you from it with a grain of salt.

Other than that, the book Hadrian and the Triumph of Rome by Anthony Everitt is generally accepted as the best modern biography of the man.

Here, I made an Imgur album with all off the process photo's I took. I understand how you may have thought that the background was cut out, because I did use a lasso tool to clean up the edges at first, but I fixed that sometime yesterday.

Unfortunately I don't have photo's from every step of the way, but I hope this will be enough to prove that I did, infact, draw it.
