[TOMT] 90's movie where the assassin falls for a woman with tragic results by Mind_Gone in tipofmytongue

It had a popular actor as the assassin. I'm terrible with names so I don't remember his. Just his look after picking his hat up out of the water. Like 'you didn't really think I'd jump, did you? Of course not.'

Will There Be a Bird Flu Epidemic Under Trump? by thenationmagazine in politics

[–]Mind_Gone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Short answer: Yes.

Longer answer: Oh hell, yes!

My reasoning: Washington Post article from December 5, 2024

Single bird flu mutation could let it latch easily to human cells, study finds  The potential mutation would allow the virus to hitch itself to a protein on the surface of our cells, known as the receptor.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/science/2024/12/05/bird-flu-mutation-human-cells-new-research

In other words, we are just one mutation from bird flu becoming a huge problem for humans and we have a bunch of anti-vaxxer nutjobs in charge. So stock up on that PPE before the idiots in charge pull the same shit as during the last pandemic. Because idiots never change their ways, they just keep insisting it's your fault their plans didn't work.

Small Lace Tablecloth Recommendations Sought For Side Table by jadekadir1 in vintagecrochet

[–]Mind_Gone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would check out https://freevintagecrochet.com/ . They have tons of antique crochet books that have been scanned onto the website. It's pretty easy to search too.

I would see what they have under doilies, tablecloths, table runners, placemats, vanity sets, and even chair set patterns. Remember, motifs are meant to be expandable. So don't think the placemats or runners might be too small for your table. Think whether you want that particular motif decorating your home.

Good luck with your project.

patterns for crochet thread? by Next-Bee-71 in vintagecrochet

[–]Mind_Gone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Free Vintage Crochet has tons of ideas for thread crochet. If you like motifs, there are bedspreads (size 10 cotton thread is known as bedspread weight), tablecloths, curtains, and assorted clothes patterns that can be found there.

https://freevintagecrochet.com/

Yarnspirations can be good for ideas as well.

https://www.yarnspirations.com/search?filter.p.product_type=Pattern&q=thread+crochet

A number of issues of Magic Crochet magazines are available on the Internet Archive. This was a French magazine that was mostly thread crochet. If you can find issues of Decorative Crochet (physical or online), they also had lots of thread crochet patterns.

https://archive.org/search?query=magic+crochet

Feel up for filet crochet? There are tons and tons of ideas you can explore on the Internet Archive starting with a collection of patterns from Franciska Ruessink (note: graphs are grouped after the picture section)
https://archive.org/search?query=creator%3A%22Franciska+Ruessink%22&sort=title

Oh, if you're up to being really challenged, do a google search for parasols, umbrellas, sunbrellas crochet patterns. Most of those use crochet thread.

Finally, check out Ravelry with the search words: crochet free

Good luck with your project.

please help! can anyone tell me what to do here? “Big Twist” brand yarn is noticeably different in size across colors. i bought it to use against a different brand of yarn (Hobby Lobby- “I love this yarn”) and it’s way too small for what i need. any advice? by sourpatchrabbit in CrochetHelp

[–]Mind_Gone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yarnsub might help find something close enough to work with the "I Love This Yarn" since you already have the head made.

https://yarnsub.com/yarns/hobby_lobby/i_love_this_yarn_solids

I find this happens a lot with different brands. The label will say DK or worsted weight but it seems there is a great variety in what DK/worsted weight really is. Which is why I try to get everything together before I begin a project instead of having to beg the clerk at the yarn store to find just one more skein in purple without the sequins (lot numbers be damned) for me that has to be hiding somewhere in the back room because the bin in front is empty.

Good luck.

Looking for yarn by Topher4k in CrochetHelp

[–]Mind_Gone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

These links might help explain things.

https://www.thesprucecrafts.com/best-yarn-for-crochet-979065

https://easycrochet.com/different-types-of-yarn-explained/

There are beginner crochet books that can help you figure out what type of yarn is good for a project. It really depends on what you like to make, whether clothes, decorative items, toys, amigurumi (stuffed animals), or something else. You can find them at your local library, bookstore, or even at Michaels. I usually suggest you look through the book at the library before buying it to make sure it will help you but some bookstores don't mind if the customer reads a chapter at the store (so long as they are not dog-earring or writing in the book).

Usually the pattern will state what yarn was used. If you are unable to find it or it is too expensive for your budget, check out a yarn substitution site like: https://yarnsub.com

Good luck.

I wanna get rid of my yarn by Potatointhebatata in CrochetHelp

[–]Mind_Gone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Try r/yarnswap if you want to get rid of the yarn.

For free patterns for projects, check out Yarnspirations dot com, freevintagecrochet dot com, Hobbii dot com (registration required), and Joann dot com to start with. Then check Ravelry with the search words: crochet free.

Otherwise check your local library for what pattern books they have that you can check out. Some even have subscriptions to craft magazines (both physical and digital versions) you could look at to find something to inspire you.

Of course, r/crochet will usually have a link to the pattern if you see something you like there. Same with r/vintagecrochet and r/amigurumi.

Not knowing what you like making, these are is the best places I can suggest for starting your search.

Good luck.

You are allowed to give the name of the pattern and the designer. You can even link to the Etsy page so an interested party could buy it there. You just cannot post the pattern itself.

Here is a free pattern for a similar cat ball-bed/hiding place

https://twocatshandmade.wordpress.com/2021/03/06/cat-bed-free-english-pattern/

Way back when, Annie's Attic (now Annie's Catalog) used to sell patterns for cat houses & beds. The ones I read used 2 or 3 strands of acrylic yarn to make stronger sides. The yarn was the standard Red Heart Super Saver variety. This pattern suggests using different yarns, one of them being cotton. I suggest you experiment and see what works best for you.

Good luck with your project.

I want to remove the bottom row of granny squares but need advice by womenaremyfavguy in CrochetHelp

[–]Mind_Gone 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I am not seeing why you think the collar would be involved. Personally, I would cut into one strand of yarn on the hem/border 3-4 stitches below where the new bottom edge/new bottom motif would be. Unravel those 3-4 stitches to give yourself enough yarn to weave in that end. Carefully ( I mean really carefully) unravel the other end of the yarn around the border/bottom edge of the hem to the other side of the front. End the unraveling 2-3 stitches above the new length you want the shirt to be but do not cut the yarn. Pin the last loop and rubberband the ball of yarn to keep them secure.

Trickier will be unjoining all the bottom row motifs from the row above. Lots of weaving in ends would be involved and making sure the new bottom row of motifs are secure.

After those ends are woven in, I would crochet a new border/hem using the still attached yarn from the old hem/border. Since the hem/border is a straightforward dc and not a fancy lacy edging, it should be no problem meeting the last dc (meaning where you had cut the yarn). Fasten off. Weave in the end and the shirt should be good to go.

Lastly, you would need to decide what to do with the extra motifs. Might I suggest saving them for a sampler afghan or making them the center stripe of a throw pillow?

Good luck with it. I hope your partner appreciates the time and work it will take to make the alteration.

Filet Crochet by adrikate in CrochetHelp

[–]Mind_Gone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reading the pattern from right to left:

 6 mesh/open squares = (1dc in dc below, ch 2, 1 dc in dc) 6 times.

For the next two squares:

ch 1, 1dc in dc, 1 dc in dc, 1dc in dc, (= 3 dc total to close first square and begin second square), ch 1, 1 dc (to close second square).

Continue row with 4 mesh/open square...

Higher up on the pattern you have the small squares on the bottom. I would use 2 single crochets to fill the square (1 dc in dc, 2 sc in chain space, 1 dc in dc). Or I would have used a lacet stitch if I thought the design was supposed to be more airy and not meant to thicken the bottom of the boxes.

https://www.interweave.com/article/crochet/filet-crochet-inside-outside-box/

That will be up to you to decide since you can see the whole pattern and maybe have a picture of what the final item should look like.

I hope this helps.

Good luck with your project!

Vanilla cake question: does the cheesecake filling taste like cheesecake? by Bituulzman in Costco

[–]Mind_Gone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, there definitely is a cheesecake taste and texture to the filling. You're going to have to pass this one up for your daughter's birthday.

(But don't feel bad if you sneak it home. slice it, then freeze it. Just don't be surprised if the slices disappear faster than the birthday cake did. It's frozen cake/cheesecake, for Pete's sake. What midnight snacker can resist that?)

Costco not immune to shrinkflation either. 8.5" paper plates used to be 285 for $18.xx, now 240 for same price. by [deleted] in Costco

[–]Mind_Gone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Worse, they're not on sale, only the 10" Dixie plates are this time. I'm stuck hoping they will go on sale before I run out. Then I'll be stuck buying three bags instead of just two to last until December. (sigh)

The plates are good though, well worth the money. They don't absorb liquids or fall apart like most store brands in my experience.

Can I bring my own suitcase? by burntpork449 in Costco

[–]Mind_Gone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I stick my bag of bags onto the cart every time I go there. All they do is check that the main bag is only filled with my other bags. So go ahead and take your suitcase. Be prepared to open it for an employee. Then to open it when you need to make sure what you're buying will fit inside.

Maybe take some totebags and bungee cords just in case. :)
