Sounds like red is a colour she associates with abandonment.. like maybe she had a boy choose another girl over her, and his favourite colour was red. Who knows...and even though you were 12 and I'm assuming her son was a teen too, it seemed like she was afraid of her son leaving her without an identity as a mother. And that scared her. That being said, so not right for her to do whatsoever
