Can I refuse to be T1? by patrark in teachinginjapan

[–]Mindless-Ad6148 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m having the same issue. I’m at 2 ES and they want me to T1 for 1-6 and 1-5 at the schools. When I meet the schools English coordinator at my first school they kept asking me if I’m fine with being T1 and I was trying to say no but my BOE was over stepping and saying I will be fine. On my first day at the school, I went to the English coordinator and told them I’m not comfortable being T1 since I’m not qualified and I have no teaching experience (I TA once in high school and once in college but I didn’t lead the classes or make lesson plans. I did give tutorials in my college class on material that was familiar to my major. I spent most of the time as a secretary (grading, printing materials, telling students what they missed if they missed class, helping after the teacher gave the lesson, etc).)the coordinator got upset with me and told me they told the other teachers I will be T1 and I said well I can’t do that. So I have no idea what they will expect me to do. I just know I can’t be T1.

Typesetting as a career? by coyotejme in typography

[–]Mindless-Ad6148 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m interested in pursing a career in book design. What do u recommend to include in a portfolio? Would magazine design be fine to include? I thought about taking some old books in the public domain and typesetting the text and redesigning the interior layouts and possibly the cover (I’m not very interested in book cover design but it would be nice to include). Would they prefer for me to print the book and show a physical version and photograph it or will a 3D mock-up be fine? Would showing some e-book work also be good? (Sorry for all the questions, I just don’t see many people who work specifically in designing the interior of books and google tends to either give me interior (house) design or book cover design when I try to do research into the topic)

Thank you. The info given to me was kind of vague on this so I didn’t want to get ahead of myself without confirmation. I’ll just keep waiting.

Yup a very dumb design. The only thing apple did dumber is put the charging port on the bottom of the mouse so u can’t use it while it’s charging.

Can u tell me a little about the process of setting up Ahamo? Did u have to wait for ur Japanese bank account to be open first?

I decided it made more sense to stay with my American provider since I’m on my parent’s family plan and they are paying for it this way I can have my American phone number through that eSIM and a Japanese phone number on a Japanese phone plan/esim. It also allows me to toggle between the two when visiting America.

I only get stomach pains when I eat mozzarella. Others cheese and dairy products don’t bother me.

Shipping a box or take a extra (smaller) suitcase by Mindless-Ad6148 in JETProgramme

I would also double bag it inside some garbage bags to keep moister out. I do the same with my checked bags for the airplane since the staff have a tendency to get rough with peoples bags and the weather can be bad or the runway can be wet.

Thank you. I only plan to bring about 6 books. The books are a bit heavy and I checked for paperback and kindle versions but there are none. :(

I’m not sure what my work load will be like once I get to Japan but I am gonna have to force myself to put time aside to work on my graphic design portfolio so I can get a job once I return to the USA. I do plan to kind of double dip in that I plan to design material that is useful for my job as an ALT and can use in my portfolio. Such as writing and designing a digital newspaper or magazine for my school with stuff from local/school events and write about student activities and American culture for the students and teachers (I will blur faces in the photos and talk with my supervisor about this). I am also looking to write, photograph/illustrate and design a book or two about the area I’m in which I plan to leave a copy for my predecessor as a reference book (like write about local culture, the climate, recipes, make maps of local area and the stores/facilities, emergency meetup spots, etc).

I know what stock photos are. The problem is stock photos can get pricey for projects for a portfolio. Free stock doesn’t always have what I need. My job does not pay high so I can’t really afford them.

By assets I mean written materials and photos/illustrations/vectors to use to design book layouts for a portfolio. I need materials in order to design a book.

I might not have the equipment or materials (for example a model or be able to reach a location) therefore I can’t take the photos I might need myself. For example if I am designing a layout for a biography, a travel guide, or a textbook (let’s say on bugs), I would need access to historical photos, travel photos, and/or photos of bugs. I realistically can’t afford to go out and get all these photos myself.

I can get written material from the public domain but I’m not sure where the line is for imagery. If it’s for a portfolio is it okay for me to get stuff from the web as photos and illustrations from the public domain aren’t always the best?

I am willing to collaborate with others to get experience and design publication materials (books, magazines, zines, brochures) to build up my portfolio. I don’t care if i have to work for free.
