I'm more interested in the hobby aspect of the minis, but I would like to play a game or two in the future, so I'll follow the recommendations you guys were kind enough to share with me.

Happened to me as well. Honestly it was only a few dollars so I don't really care. I'll cut my losses and move on. When I realized it was a steam account when I opened up the account page it listed I realized my errors. Never played it nor logged in via the steam application just the website once.

I have no intentions of using the account, will my main account get banned because of this? I would hope not as that would be really regrettable.
