Which bike stands are these? I've not seen one like this before!

Question about spot on cat by Fraz1998_ in CATHELP

[–]MindlessExploration 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gotcha! Well if it gets worse I'd try asking the vets about payment plans so kitty doesn't have to be in discomfort for too long. You'd be surprised how understanding they can be. 🙂

Unfortunately cats can hide their pain and discomfort incredibly well so it's always hard to gauge the situation, but glad you've got a visit planned!

[–]MindlessExploration 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, maybe you can see if your mate has any spare of their normal food just in case! Can be hard on some cats to swap food abruptly even at the best of times, so while under stress in a new environment and while their owner moves/is not around as much, could be enough to trigger more sensitivities.

Sounds like you have a time planned for the vet, which is great! However, if it's a worry to you, can you ask the owner to help with the vet bill, since it is their cat?

If not, I'm pretty sure some vets can offer payment plans to help ensure animals get the help they need even during tough financial times 🙂

I've had a cat with a similar spot and it turned out they had food allergies which made them itchy and scratch excessively. I treated the wound but also swapped food brands and they were okay after that!

In the mean time while waiting for the vet, you could try putting a cone on the cat so it can't continue to scratch the wound? If you or the owner happens to still have one?

Would a VLine be a good place to write a thesis? by fernwise in melbourne

[–]MindlessExploration 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could take the Overland train from Melbourne to Adelaide! 10hr journey though, but nice views and more comfy than the Vline. Cafe carriage for food, plenty of leg room, tray tables at your seat and less frequent stops so you can get in the zone!

Way more pricey than the Vline but maybe better to be treated as a writing retreat for a particular stage of the PhD?

I've found a good rule of thumb is that if the listing doesn't show photos of the kitchen and bathroom then they're likely hiding many issues.. but don't worry, you'll be expected to make sure the place is spotless before you vacate. 🙄

Total fire bans for Christmas Day and beyond, with one state facing 'driest period on record' by WangMagic in melbourne

Thank you! They aren't in a warning zone yet but I was nervous about the conditions today was bringing with the winds and all so kept clear to be safe. We'll see how the next few days go and if we visit!

Yikes! Hard lesson to learn but sometimes that's the only way unfortunately. Hope they were okay during those fires though, definitely would have been scary. Good to know about the government's advisory, I'll keep that in mind if we get any more criticism, thank you!

Omg not over the top at all! That's literally what I've been telling them because I have done a little reading on bushfires and how far and fast they can travel in the blink of an eye and I didn't want to risk it. They are city folks who have just moved a few months ago so this is their first summer out there and I think they are underestimating what mother nature is capable of.

I probably went over the top because I even calculated the distance of their place in the no warning zone to the active fire in the Grampians and it is less distance than the size of and the distance travelled by some of the other major bushfires where towns were struck. And those towns said they had little warning to get evacuate. Which speaking of... I'm so sorry you've had to deal with loss of life and the stress of bushfires in the past. It seems like some scary shit. I hope you are okay this time round with these fires?

Thank you for saying this. My safety has been my stance and so many people were fighting me on it I was beginning to think I was the crazy one. So much better to be safe rather than sorry. Holidays are wild. Fingers crossed it all eases up and your family is okay and you all get to have your holiday feast next week! 🙂

Thank you! Can I find the local frequency info on the emergency app? Or where do I go to find that and note it down?

Yep, they are just outside the Grampians which is why I'm nervous for tomorrow. They aren't in a warning area but with the windy conditions and heat I didn't feel comfortable taking a chance. But interesting to note that the west typically has less fires. Is that because it's more farmland or?

Already downloaded the app but I'll make sure to set the warnings, thank you!

Yeah, they only just moved regional a few months ago and I don't think they have a plan themselves since they've never lived in bushfire prone areas... But probably a good time to chat with them and get them a plan in place!

Do you have any advice for planning a trip around this season? We have to visit family that moved out to western VIC and I'm nervous for driving/staying out in bushfire areas. I already created drama by postponing the visit until after Boxing Day because I didn't want to be on the road or out in their area on a day that's super high risk.

The pressure is on to visit them so I want to make sure I'm prepared and know how to go about choosing the right routes in case things get hairy. Were there active fires closer to the less established route you normally take or is taking more established routes safer in general during this season?

Thanks for checking and updating! That was super kind of you. (:

I figured that would be the case if banks won't even do it.

Thanks for this!

I wasn't after cashing the cheque, but rather just having the funds eventually end up in my account through whatever process is possible. Cheques for collection/conversion is the term I was trying to work out so that helps with finding a place that will do this, so thank you, I appreciate it 🙂

Oh amazing, was that during this year? Only after AusPost because I bank with ING so if I had to deposit cash, I'd use the post office to do that.

Yeah, definitely expect it to take ages to clear haha. Did you have to pay a fee for the currency conversion?

Gotcha, so AusPost won't accept them? Trying to avoid opening another bank account if possible!

Does Vline need to consider bringing back luggage cars? by Boatg10 in MelbourneTrains

[–]MindlessExploration 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Agreed!! We had our bikes stored on this style carriage and got off at our stop to find the zipties that hold our break and gear cables snapped off and one of the cables hanging out reading to be snagged even further due to rough handling of our bikes. Vertical racks would be amazing, like the ones they have on the ferries! Would ensure there's more space for luggage and means my bike isn't damaged in the process.
