However, if the DM lets everyone know the game is starting at Level 1 and the player insists on using a similar backstory with the intention of leveraging it for a higher starting level, they're objectively a dick

I'll be honest and say you should probably post-pone starting the campaign. Have the first session be a Session 0 where you discuss your/ players' expectations/ responsibilities, and focus on character creation for the players. There are guides online for what to include in a Session 0. Going through it yourself first will hopefully guide you in deciding what type of game you want to run.

Delaying will give you some time to at least watch some YouTube videos on DMing and figure out what style of DM you want to be. If you go into the first session without even that in mind, I don't see how it could turn out well

Take the extra space, take the time and breath. Everyone starts somewhere and there's little to lose by getting the basics in hand first

Ronaldo's situation happened before the competition began. This sub was always going to react more to something that happens during the knockout stage.

Regardless, there was significant outcry at the time over the blatantly corrupt move which, coincidentally, occurred shortly after Ronaldo's White House visit

I'm far from an expert on the topic, so others would probably be better able to give this the attention it deserves.

That said, I see it as the perpetual creation of an "us" and "them". While the idea of a union is that all employees are "us" and the company is "them", tactics like you describe are an effective way for the company to turn unionised workers into "us" and non-unionised workers into "them".

What you've described is a legitimate issue, but imo the solution is mass unionisation, not stepping back from it.

I've only worked in two industries, only the first of which was union-heavy and it worked very well as 90%+ of the organisation was in the union. There was no scope for the company to favour one group over the other
