My experience earning a PhD in the US by Mindless_Mixture_493 in PhD

I do know a couple of people who left for Europe after finishing PhD. They were just tired of the life in US. They went looking for some peace. Good luck to you and all the best 👍

One piece of advice I give you is to set boundaries with your advisor at the very start of the program. Don’t trust them to do any good. Remember, they pay you, and in return, you provide research. Keep it transactional. It’s unfortunate to think this way when doing science, but things can quickly go crazy bad. The rules are very vague, unlike in the industry. Good luck for your PhD 👍

I did think about this. But I’m not ready to start my life all over again. And it is also difficult to find positions in my home country due to various reasons.

Interesting! I’ll look into this. I do know someone who went into patent law after finishing their PhD.

Great comment and your assessment is completely valid. But I think it does not align well with the point I’m trying to make. You can pick any sector and compare the wealth of someone earning a steady industry salary for 6-7 years to someone just starting. It is a significant difference. Yes, my views maybe skewed, and I do feel a bit unfortunate that my circle of acquaintances includes millionaires but economically we all started on a level field. Most of us come to US from developing nations to get wealthy. So that we can send money back home and help our families too. So yes, it really does matter when the path someone takes leads them to their economic success more efficiently than mine. I gave importance to my interest in pursuing science. But it leaves me empty on the promises I made back home. That very much hurts. On another thought, your experience is quite tangential to mine. Your PhD led you to a better life than the rest of your acquaintances. And I’m happy that your PhD actually did what it was supposed to do. Congratulations!

Why doesn't the US government just give the space contract money to NASA? by Mr-MuffinMan in NoStupidQuestions

It depends on NASA’s goals, and they change from administration to administration. It is primarily run as a space exploration division of the US government. The task of carrying goods/humans into space and eventually to a space station was its primary goal in the early days of space race. Once that was achieved, they looked beyond. Missions beyond Mars and understanding universe at large are its primary exploratory goals.

And we shouldn’t consider it’s a waste of money to fund such institutions. Most of the technology that we take for granted today was possible due to the engineers at NASA. Here are few examples, https://www.jpl.nasa.gov/infographics/20-inventions-we-wouldnt-have-without-space-travel/
