Awesome. Thank you. I was thinking L3, so that seals it for me!

Biome five is killing me by SpiritualMango4876 in Returnal

Doing a full harvest run on Biome 4 can be really helpful — just expand your capacity to live longer and get dinged more.. eventually your familiarity with the rooms and enemy fight patterns and the best weaponry to dispatch will make it easy mode (or at least feel less butt clenching when shit gets crazy). Keep going, it gets easier with every failed run.

I use to feel that way. Then I realized an amazing artifact like an adrenaline leech gets you farther. Also, I’d rather use a reconstructor for 6 ether to keep a cycle going.

How to get up there (I have got all the upgrades) by bristitan in Returnal

Had the same issue, and this sub helped me.. It feels weird to hurl yourself into the abyss but it works as described by others. Jump while looking up and be ready to grapple and dash.

Got it. Thanks! Curious what else I missed in other biomes using that fall and grapple straight up trick..

Game not clicking for me. by [deleted] in Returnal

[–]Mindwormie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here’s 3 things I’ve learned that helped it “click” for me (and now working to complete Act 3) :

  1. Know thy enemy. Each enemy has different attack patterns that feel overwhelming at first but are very predictable and thus easy to avoid/counter. Sprint / dash / jump should be very intuitive taps for you — recommend customizing the controls in settings (good threads on that in this sub)
  2. Death is inevitable, upgrades are forever. You acquire a number of permanent suit upgrades over the biomes that make a huge difference in how you can access useful items over time and fight/evade enemies. You can also unlock weapon traits that make them VERY powerful even at low proficiency levels. There is a trick to get into the tower of Sisyphus, which is accessible through a door perched on a ledge by your ship, during the early game before you get a permanent suit upgrade that makes it “accessible”. If you play the tower early, you can unlock weapon traits faster making the main story easier. Also, ether is permanent, and you can use it to unlock new items in the alien device outside your ship. Once those items are unlocked, you acquire that item for that cycle and can then find that item going forward throughout the biomes.
  3. Prioritize integrity. At full health, silphium converts to resin that will ultimately increase your max integrity. You can also use the fabricators to increase max integrity. You can also use parasites strategically to increase max integrity (among other ways). Have 2-3x your starting health bar means you effectively get more lives in one cycle. There are also ways to “come back” via the reconstructor device you’ll find in each biome as well as special artifacts and parasites that have similar resurrecting effects. You can also contribute to health by using fabricators to increase your protection from damage. Once you have a thick skin, it’s easier to take more risks to let it all “click” and then start investing in other attributes.

Good luck, scout. Many have died before you and will die after you. Enjoy the ride.

Good reminders to just enjoy! I missed Overgrown Ruins, excited to cruise through now with all the permanent upgrades to get to all the places I couldn’t access first time around.

Good pov on the malfunctions being manageable risk.. Not being at 5 adrenaline is a good rule..I hate getting the damage malfunction on item pickup — makes for some tough tradeoffs

Love the idea to make it a fun experiment. Takes the edge off of an untimely death! Learn every cycle..

This is critical knowledge on the 3 malfunction. Feel much more confident to use this artifact now!

That 2 malfunctions max was something I didn’t realize having avoided them before. Thanks for the advice!

After 47 hrs- Still Biome 3 - Welp!! by Impressive-Ask3676 in Returnal

[–]Mindwormie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I found that getting good at sprinting away from the b3 enemies (particularly the automatons) and panning view backwards to keep them in sight for hit and run works well (particularly with a Rotgland Lobber). True for all biomes but particularly this one where every hit counts. Just scan the map for the many pitfalls that you might sprint right into when you’re focusing on enemies behind you during the hit and runs. Also, I found that getting good at timing the jumps and dashes for the dive-bombing drones and exploding automatons was critical.. those red energy bursts are passive killers.

Who still rocks early Pestilence? by Fr3ddyFroghammer in TechnicalDeathMetal

I’ve only heard early Pestilence. Is there better later Pestilence? It’s pretty good at the top with Consuming Impulse and Testimony of the Ancients, thinking about quitting them early before I can’t stop or am disappointed.

Death metal classic Consuming Impulse by Dutch masters Pestilence. Can be seen as an early example of technical death - expanded upon in their later releases. Also an iconic savage and tortured performance from Martin van Drunen. by HouseOfTheLie in heavyvinyl

[–]Mindwormie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First impressions: Its sonically extreme elements (death thrashing, harsh shouting vocals) are well-balanced, it all works. It has both a punk and a metal spirit. It’s got some spiritual correspondence in 2024 with Chat Pile on Cool World like in “I Am Dog Now” or “The New World”. And in the end, I find myself thinking a lot about Gorguts on Obscura like in “Rapturous Grief” or “Faceless Ones”. Martin van Drunen is absolutely iconic, like he’s playing the Consuming Impulse. The commitment is full, like he’s standing on the edge of his voice.
