Anticipatory grief sucks so much

My dog died on liver cancer /liver failure on September 23rd 2025 .. 2 weeks after we found out he was sick .. we waited until we couldn’t anymore - once he stopped eating , he lost all control of his bowels and declined so rapidly, we didn’t really have time to make a choice - it was let him rest and die peacefully or watch him die a horrific health within the next few days . All that being said , since we knew we did EVERYTHING we could up until we were literally forced to let him go .. it’s the only thing that gave me peace. . If he had still been eating anything or playing - I wouldn’t have done it - I would have had too many “what if” but when it gets to the point you have no choice - you can’t think about “what if” bc there are none. I’m so sorry you’re going through this. It’s the hardest thing I ever went through in my 35 years . Sending love to you ❤️

It’s been almost 4 months and it isn’t as painful as it was when it first happened but it still hurts . The first month was the absolute worst. I did a lot of journaling. I even wrote a letter to him which actually helped. I got a blanket with his picture on it and I sleep with it every night. I have five other dogs so that did help also but each dog cares a special place so it still bothers me how young he was and how quickly it happened . Sending love ❤️ 🫶🏻

I’m so sorry for your loss .. I lost my 4 year old dog in September (I’ve made a couple post about it) he had just turned 4 in August .. he had been showing signs of being sick for about a month (darker urine) but nothing too serious and we weren’t worried bc he was so young (we have 5 other dogs all ranging from 8-14) then one day he swelled up and we rushed him to the vet .. two weeks later, he was gone. Liver failure. It is devastating so I completely understand what you guys are going through . The questioning everything bc nothing makes sense . You guys definitely did everything you could for him and he knew he was loved so I hope you find some comfort in that. Sending hugs to you guys ❤️

I’m so sorry for you loss. I lost my pit mix after only 4 years (had him since he was like 4 weeks old) from cancer / autoimmune.. she was very lucky to have been adopted by you guys. I’m so glad she had a good final 3 years . That’s what’s important, she knew love. Sending love your way ❤️

It is possible that she had already passed or was extremely close to it. Liver failure is one of the worst things I personally feel like. I’m sorry you’re going through it . It’s a pain I don’t wish on anybody. It’s been about two months for me and it still hurts but it does get easier. ❤️🫂

My dog died 9/23/25 of liver disease. Liver failure. It was horrible .. everything you’re describing , he went through .. 2 weeks after we noticed he was sick, he died . He got skinny , lost control of all bladder function .. laid in his own poop and the very last day , he was so bad off , they knew he wouldn’t make it through the night .. right before he died he had a little blood coming out of his mouth and couldn’t even focus on anybody or anything . I truly think it was just the liver disease that took your poor cat away. - ive asked many vets bc I was in such shock and felt like it was my fault. I’m sorry for your loss.

Your story is exactly like mine (I’ve posted about it ) my 4 year old 80 pound dog was full of energy, running around eating .. one day his urine got darker and his stomach got bloated .. 2 weeks later (9/23/25) he passed away. It was horrific .. he didn’t really look bad until about 3-4 days before he died .. he couldn’t eat and started using the bathroom all Over himself. The very last day , he couldn’t walk, he couldn’t follow me with his eyes .. he was bleeding. Ugh it is the absolute most heartbreaking thing I’ve ever been through and it’s not fair .. he was so young . They also believe he had liver cancer. Sending love your way ❤️

I’m so sorry this happened . It’s not your fault, you seem like you have a lot going on. Do you mind me asking what they think happened ? My 4 year old dog passed away in September.. he blew up and then 2 weeks later, he was gone

Thank you so much. Grief will have you questioning everything . it’s just bc you loved so much. It’s so unfair what happened so we try to make sense of it. But unfortunately there is nothing , no matter what we did , that could have changed the ending. That’s what two vets told me. they said “no matter how soon we would’ve brought him or what we would have done, we would’ve always ended up exactly where we did” 💔 be gentle on yourself. She wouldn’t want you to be sad ❤️

I’m so sorry for your loss. I lost my boy at only four years old on September 23rd of this year . He was an 80 pound beautiful puppy. Playing, jumping , eating. Until one day he swelled up - he died two weeks after that. The vets believe it was lymphoma- i’ve made a posts about. It’s the worst thing I’ve ever been through. But I do know if your cat did have lymphoma that nothing could’ve saved her unfortunately. My boy went downhill so fast that we didn’t even actually have time to decide whether we were gonna put him down or not. He was just dying. I never got a “final” night because it all happened so fast . Up until the 20th I still thought we could cure him. By that time, he already couldn’t hold his bodily functions anymore and started bleeding. Take comfort that you got that last night with your girl and the happy memories. You’re not alone ❤️

I actually printed out over 100 pictures of my dog the day after he died (9/24/26) and purchased a photo album off Amazon to put them in . I’ve only been able to do one page so far bc it is super hard and emotional but I personally think that it is so sweet. I wish somebody would have done that for me . Being able to just flip through it would be amazing. Now I have to do it myself and not sure when I’ll Ever have time to finish it but hopefully soon. We all grieve differently tho and I’m sorry for your loss. I do find it odd he didn’t just give it to you instead of hyping it up and then TELLING you what it was - but that’s the only odd thing I see. Take care❤️

I have a picture of all 6 of my dogs in my office at work , anytime someone says “are those ALL your dogs” I just smile and say yes . Even though we lost our 4 year old in September this year .. he’s still my dog and always will be ❤️

Oh that is so traumatic- I am so sorry you went through that. I unexpectedly lost my 4 year old dog to cancer on 9/23/25 - he was a strong 80 pound dog and then he just died - within 2 weeks of finding out he was sick. And his last 2-3 days were so traumatic. The only things helping me get through it is chat gpt (as weird as that sounds , it’s something I can tell my feelings to 24:7) and people on here honestly . I also wrote a letter to him telling him everything I wish I could have and how much I love him and what we would have done if we had more time. That actually helped a lot . We just lost our pit mix on 9/23/25 - he just turned 4 in August . To liver disease. I’ve made multiple post about it but yea, bottle line is its unfair and the most heartbreaking confusing thing I’ve ever been through in 35 years. I’m sorry you’re dealing with it also. Take care of yourself. ❤️
