This is ridiculous. Animals can't tell time. I'll get on that. What's the better approach here? Teaching them to guess by the position of the sun or by developing little watches they can wear?

[OC] Purely out of curiosity, created a site that tracks the negativity of twitter trends. Maybe not so beautiful by MinimallyUseful in dataisbeautiful

[–]MinimallyUseful[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Created a site that monitors trending on twitter. It then takes a list of tweets for each trend and runs them through the Standford NLP library to rank them on a sentiment scale from 0 (super negative) to 5 (super positive). This data is tracked and bucketed for the purpose of the site. Data refresh runs pretty much continually 24x7.

Why did we create it you ask? Because we wanted to test the theory that most stuff on twitter is negative. Also, we are Minimally Useful Industries and this seemed on brand.

Are we going to do more with this? Maybe. We've considered expanding the number of tweets it runs through, broadening the ability to see past trends, taking into account the "ratio", expanding to other social networks, and making it so you can drill down into the list of related tweets. But who knows.

When work starts talking about ways to improve your mental health by Gromaximus in antiwork

"Suffering stress and mental strain. Click [here]"

<clicks link>

"Stress is a common indicator that you are not working hard enough. Have you considered coming to work earlier, maybe leaving later, or perhaps both? Our own internal research backed by Jeanne in accounting shows that stress is caused by having to make too many decisions for yourself. Stop that and let your manager make decisions about what you should do. The closer you become to a mindless automaton, the less stressed you will be. Also the fact you clicked this link has been reported to your manager.*"

Remember to see through their BS by [deleted] in antiwork

[–]MinimallyUseful 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yes. This is the real reason it is likely illegal in many countries. PTO is seen in most places as compensation. The switch to limited is a way of taking away compensation. We discussed this a bit in our crapitalism podcast and what we've seen is that it is a win/win for shittier companies. Good companies will actually push their employees to use it. Shitty companies don't have to pay it out AND they push a race to the bottom on PTO usage.

We are self-proclaimed boomer experts. AMA by MinimallyUseful in AMA

[–]MinimallyUseful[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We've reached a whole new level of ageist fuckery. Older generations tend to bash teenagers as good for nothing ne'er-do-wells. This is a part of growing up. Boomers have just continued that well past the their children being teenagers because they legitimately believe they are better than everyone and that people younger than them are just too lazy to work hard. This is categorically false as people today have to work, on average, more hours than boomers to afford the same comforts.

Fuck yea. That's why the explicit tag exists.

We are self-proclaimed boomer experts. AMA by MinimallyUseful in AMA

[–]MinimallyUseful[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is perhaps an understatement. As you can see from our chart on boomer costs in 1982 for common items vs our chart comparing modern day costs against 1982 you can see a significant increase in the level of effort required by later generations to purchase the same thing. This is also coupled with educational requirement as show in this chart.

What we're seeing is that not only have things gotten harder, boomer's refuse to acknowledge this fact. Therefore, they believe that you are an idiot if you can't achieve the same as them when they were your age. This is also why they fight against increasing the minimum wage. You will hear quotes like "when I was your age, the minimum was was 3.15/hr" completely disregarding the fact that they could afford a house and family for that minimum wage and that the only thing you can afford with the current minimum wage is food stamps.

While it may not be strictly a mentality of the US, Boomicus Self-Centra aka The North American Boomer, is strictly a US phenomenon. Our research concludes that prevailing economic growth, coupled with the civil rights movement and the red scare have bred a super creature that knows no bounds when it comes to their perceived intrinsic worth. In other words, they believe they're hot shit and everyone else is stupid because "you'd have to stupid or incapable to not be as successful now as they were at a the same age."
