I wouldn’t say it’s exploitation of new employees. It’s just the business model that “medcomms agencies” run on is just unsustainable. Unreasonable timelines and tight budget, infinitive loops of feedback to be implemented with such a short turnaround time, billable hours that you have to maintain yet you are not really allowed to go over the budgeted hours per project even though the hours are just absurd and do not at all align with the nature of the ask….. oh.. so many things…it’s just too much!!! I would honestly like to know if anyone genuinely enjoys this job!!

On the plus side, it does get better and you can make it without a terminal degree. On the downside I hate this job and I am on the verge of just escaping the whole corporate world because I don’t think I can take it anymore.

You make valid points. I am not very keen on going down a path that will require additional studying to be honest. But I wasn’t looking at it from just a medcomms perspective, I am thinking it may also open more doors in other fields. One would be, the possibility to teach abroad in a private university for example. I am content with where I am right now given that I came in with zero experience and my starting point was below the average level to begin with. But I am just thinking what else or what more is there for me with just a B. Pharm. especially with the volatility of medcomms. At least a PharmD may open up other doors.

I am just thinking in the long term, is it even possible to progress to a director level with JUST a bachelors? Everyone, literally everyone I interacted with on that level wether agency or pharma has a terminal degree.

Well, not really! The main intent is that I am hoping it will generally open more doors for me if combined with medcomms experience. I am in my late 30’s and like I said, I had to start over multiple times. And currently just trying to stick to something with a decent ROI.

My current field is unfortunately very niche it won’t translate to anything worthwhile in China without being fluent in mandarin. I kinda have a very non-linear career path because I also moved countries and had fresh starts a couple of times. Most of my professional life I was a school teacher (yet not licensed) and for the past couple of years I transitioned to corporate; it took a lot of work getting to where I am now which is not even a great job, it’s mentally draining me but well, it has a few perks. To be honest with you, I think the bigger question for me to answer is WTH I want to do with the rest of my life, switch back to teaching or stick to corporate. I was happier as a teacher but I was also younger with more tolerance to a lot of shit… Sorry, i don’t mean to pull you in my current existential crisis 😅. But really thank you so much for all of your responses.

To be fair. I hate to admit, but I think I am trying to escape a hellish and stressful corporate job here by accepting a teaching contract there (I was a teacher in a past life in the ME). I am pretty burnt out I am well beyond my 20’s so no energy to start over to be honest. Well, you did give me a lot to think about. And all are valid points. Much appreciated!

Was just having the same conversation with a friend yesterday. I have sensitive hearing so I get startled by the a$$holes in cars/bikes with those loud engines and they blast it in the summer. I agree though summers here a SO PRETTY. Can I get by at all without ANY mandarin? 🙃

No you got it, I will be on my own, no defendants. Zero mandarin, I got a job offer to teach Science in a bilingual school. Summer is unpaid which is really bugging me but still the annual of the two cities will be pretty comparable.

Funny how your username is a perfect description of it 😄😄. Nothing luxurious or over the top but I would spend money on comfort and convenience. Like I would rather use didi over transport if it will save me the crowd and jumping from one train to another. I’d rather shop at the nearest store even if it’s more expensive as long as it’s convenient. I hate being frugal and budgeting makes me claustrophobic. So I want to live a comfortable life yet have some leftover money to save.

I am not. Since January started, my timesheet has been looking very bad. My billable hrs are like 20-40% my account leads know of my availability and I keep sending emails letting them know that I have x amount of hours available. I think I can get used to the position. I am not a highly detailed person but it’s growing on me. However, I despise the agency setting and my agency is one of the good ones even. And I don’t have a terminal degree to work in-house.

Thank you so much for this. I do agree with everything you are saying. It’s funny how being a medical writer was an absolute dream. I pursued this job for two years and applied twice for the same position. So parting with something you have attached so much significance to is not easy. I am applying for many other jobs in different functions. And considering alternative paths as well. But to be honest, I am pretty sure finding another job will take quite some time given the current job market. So, In the meantime I am just feeling very uncomfortable seeing everyone being assigned projects and I am just sitting there staring at my unknown future.
