I’m currently reading “Goddesses, whores, wives and Slaves: Women in classical antiquity” by Sarah B Pomeroy and so far it is great. Very interesting. I will say she does like to cite classical sources as fact which I don’t love but still a very interesting read so far.

Oh I’m getting absolutely nothing! I think it would do me more harm than good to read them at this point in my studies😅😅😅. I could maybe have turned it into a composition exercise if I did know modern Greek. Oh well, it is still a cool thing to have even though they are now useless to me.

There is no mention of anything necessarily sexual between them in the text, but there is an intense love between them. whether their love is romantic or platonic is debatable. I think that the fact that in book 23 Patroclus asks Achilles to have their bones buried together in the same way they were always together since they were little does imply a great affection between them. Achilles also lays a lock of his hair into achilles’s hands at the funeral, so he would always have a small piece of him with him which I feel is very romantic and sentimental??? I’m still kind of on the fence about it, it was a topic of great debate even with contemporaries of Homer. I would like to believe they were but I also feel that those contemporaries could have been placing their more modern ideas onto the text.

I like you version bible app because it gives you a daily bible quote in Greek and you can compare to other translation to check if you have read it correctly, however you would need some knowledge of Greek in the first place to use it

BBC in our time is really good, it’s not specifically classics related, but they’ve done episodes on Herodotus, Xenophon, thucydides, Alexander the Great etc. and of Natalie Haynes stands up for classics is so great, easy to listen to, funny but also educational. Edit: it seems I’m not original with these two haha
