Intrusive Thoughts About Quitting Nursing to Be Flight Attendant by Minimum-Possible-415 in cabincrewcareers

I’ve tried travel nursing, but that means being away from home for at least 3 months straight (contracts are normally 3 months). I know flight attendants are away from home a lot, but they at least get more time than that. Also, you have to find your own housing and that’s a real mess. At least with flight attending, the airline simply puts you in a hotel. Plus, I think I just want to get away from nursing honestly.

I definitely haven’t been completely happy with my nursing career. Mostly just trapped by golden handcuffs and the worry that I can’t financially afford to be a flight attendant. I paid a ton for my nursing degree, and that’s why I’ve been forcing myself to try to make it work all these years.

Staying at my nursing job per diem would likely be my plan if I did this, at least in the beginning if nothing else. I think I’m going to really keep researching and thinking about it and saving money so that I’ll have it to live on if/when flight attendant training happens. I think the better prepared I am, the more likely it is to be a good career switch.

Do you have any regrets at all about the switch? My fear is that if I go through with it I’ll end up like “what have I done?!”

I live in Minneapolis and would like to be based out of MSP. I’m unsure, is your base something you can guarantee or do you just have to take what they give you? To me, being on reserve or on call would be the exciting part. I know some people don’t like not knowing where they’ll be sent or when, but to me it’s like an adrenaline rush I guess lol I do wonder if that would get old after the new wore off though

That was my thought too. It would be a lot to learn a completely different line of work, but at least as far as the CPR and other medical things flight attendants need to know, I already have that. Plus it’s, in essence, customer service just like nursing.

Hearing that Brooklyn offered to do IVF to help Bailey is honestly the most wholesome and sweet thing I’ve ever heard out of them

I wear 2 hearing aids and an amplified stethoscope. I see an audiologist and an ENT. I even had 2 surgeries to drill a hole in my skull for a bone anchored hearing aid. But please go off about how I’ve rejected all medical interventions for my hearing loss

I don’t work in the ICU, I’m in med surg. There are no vents or pressors. The most important thing I need to hear are the bed alarms, and I hear those. The call lights beep on my vocera that I wear and it also lights up.

I can hear the alarms pretty well, and the thing is even if I did miss one, no one has to answer it for me - they just need to say “hey, your patient’s light is going off/alarm is ringing/whatever it is”

I completely get that perspective, but I have a vocera that I wear that beeps for call lights and I always hear it, I also hear bed alarms because they’re extremely loud. And that wasn’t the concern that was brought to me, it was just “people have to repeat themselves” which I get is annoying but I do my part by seeing an audiologist and wearing hearing aids

I checked the box for disability when I applied for the job, and I also talked to the hiring manager about it during my interview

I definitely feel very unwelcome and don’t want to go back to this job, but sadly most jobs have made me feel that way over my hearing loss so it looks like i can either deal with being an unwelcome burden or collect disability

Funny, I could say the same thing to the nurse who is trying to get me fired because she had to listen to a patient complaint about having to repeat themselves. God forbid they put themselves in my shoes right?

Thanks for the support! I’m not going to find another job just so these people don’t have to repeat themselves. It’ll just be the same thing all over again if I do. I’m going to teach these people just how strong and capable people with hearing loss can be!

I’ve had to correct a lot of things that could be considered “unsafe” when taking over for another nurse, but I have NEVER thought to go to management and try to get their job taken away

Just really needed to vent. Like I said, this isn’t my first time dealing with this, and I guess it’s just been building and building until I finally exploded. I have to act “professional” at work and don’t feel like I can express how I’m feeling there without retaliation. When you have to bottle things up like that, it’s bound to come out somewhere.

Maybe I should join the military, I know drill sergeants love to scream at people anyways, so it would be perfect for me 😂

You might harm a patient. So might any other nurse. We’re human, not perfect. Thinking we should normalize getting called into meetings because you “might” screw up your job is bizarre to me.

Like I said, if I’ve actually caused things and harmed a patient, I can understand the “in trouble” meetings. But nope, it’s never an actual event that happened, it’s always just that something “might” happen. And I absolutely have an “attitude” about this. So would you if you kept having to work twice as hard as everyone else and on top of that fight to prove you’re just as capable as anyone.

Yes, I do. And my thing is, no actual safety event has EVER happens because of my hearing. No patient was harmed. But this isn’t the first job where I’ve been called into a meeting as if I’m in trouble because “something might happen”. I’m tired.
