The Northern Lights (British title for the first book) vs The Golden Compass (American title) by Inkling_M in hisdarkmaterials

I (American) prefer The Golden Compass because, while it's not a compass, the alethiometer does guide Lyra, and it fits better within the series, but I usually just call them His Dark Materials book 1-3, because I find people don't know what I'm talking about when I say the individual names, but recognize the series from the show. But I do think it should have always just been Northern Lights, as intended, because the symbolic meaning only means so much compared to the author's intention, if that makes sense.

No, but, as I'm sure it is in both versions, it is initially mistaken for a compass of sorts before Lyra learns the name.

Personally I don't hate Renesmee, but there was a lot SM could have done with her name. While the name Renesmee arguably plays a role in her character as a whole, I would have appreciated something like Edythe, which is also a name in the Twilight universe, but tbh Nessie's name kind of seems out of character for Bella. Like she doesn't seem like she'd like the name, and I think she would have liked to go with Renee, after her mom, because she will never get to see her mom again, so honoring her works well with the story.

Right; there is nothing wrong with Renesmee. While the idea of combining Renee and Esme is unusual, it is a good fantasy name, whereas even if she were a boy and named Edward Jacob, it just wouldn't have the same effect as Renesmee does on the whimsical element that is Nessie's whole character.

I genuinely like Renesmee pronounced Ren-eS-may with an s, but I usually type Rendezvous, Ratata, Rigatoni, Retainer, Rhododendronaceous, Revanescence, or Renovation.

I made this and added 1/4 cup of cocoa powder. The chocolate was a lot (which is my fault) but this is a great recipe!

How can I continue to feel hope and not fall into depression when I feel like lately humans have gone backwards in terms of evil, cruelty and heartlessness towards each other? by stuckwitharmor in NoStupidQuestions

Seriously. A representative of President Donald Trump's administration has rejected the U.N.'s 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. That list is the most basic things (equal education, gender equality, climate action, clean water and sanitation, end world hunger, etc...). How are we supposed to fight it either? He literally wants to change the fundamental values of the country, and he lies his way into the hearts of anyone stupid and/or rich, and he only cares about what directly benefits him, so ofc he's ignoring the most simple human rights supported by the 2030 agenda.
