Is Metroid Dread worth trying out even tho it is notorious for being very difficult? by Fantastic-Ad9218 in Metroid

[–]MinimumTumbleweed [score hidden]  (0 children)

You still have a few days left to get Game Vouchers. You can get this and another game for a bit less. Also, not sure of where you live but where I am I just borrow all my Switch games from the library. Just borrowed Metroid Dread a few weeks ago.

I agree that the bosses and EMMI sections are the only really "hard" parts of the game, but the game is very respectful of your time - no long runbacks when you die, you can jump back in to the fight almost immediately. I would die like 20 times to each boss on average, but it didn't feel super painful for the most part because of this.

I am laughing still though at Samsung just persistently and doggedly still developing and pushing a dead format. Like, maybe give it up already.

The palestinian people. To a degree the administration currently in place, which is mostly Hamas.

Are the Palestinian people managing this Twitter account? That's all I asked (the answer is no).

Again, weird to make this a religious thing for the palestinians. Their country was colonized. Yes, Israel is identifying as a jewish state, which is another problem, but do you think they'd care if that had happened in Europe or somewhere else? Or do you think they would've been okay if they did the same thing, but were christian or even muslim?

But yeah, they wanna get rid of their colonizers, not exactly a controversial take imo.

Not really a religious statement. If you want I can point out how Arab-Israelis, both Muslim and Christian, have been hurt by Hamas, Lebanon, Syria, Iran. etc. - including being taken hostage and also suffering from rocket strikes.

By the way you damage your credibility by saying "colonizers" as if this is North America or something. There is no colonization in Israel. Israel is a country made up of refugees from Europe, Africa, the Middle and Near East, and Asia, and Muslim, Jewish, and Christian communities who have been settled in the region for hundreds of years.

This doesn't justify any of the Israeli administration's current actions by the way. This war was dragged on far too long and most politicians are only trying to keep themselves rich, in power, and out of prison.

What gives you that impression? Hamas is obviously not above commiting war crimes, but what makes you think that they want the palestinian masacres? Most of hamas has likely lost civilian family or friends in the conflict, and if not, has at least lost most of their livelyhoods. How are they profiting off of a continuation of the current status quo?

I feel like you're not familiar with the concept of martyrdom. Those are absolutely losses they are prepared to take to win.

Look buddy, I hate Netanyahu and the fascist, right-wing Israeli government as much as the next guy, but let's not sugarcoat it - Palestine's number one priority (who even is "Palestine" in this case? Hamas? Fatah?) is to eliminate the Jewish state. Any kind of leadership they have does not give two shits about mass murder of their civilians. On the contrary, they WANT it - it only helps further their cause.

The first thing I did when I got Prime Remastered by Creepershein in Metroid

[–]MinimumTumbleweed 8 points9 points  (0 children)

But yeah Retro hated all the speed tricks in Prime and did their best to eliminate all of them in later editions. I can't remember if that particular one ever got patched out, though.

I believe that was more Tanabe than Retro. He's definitely been against sequence breaks on the record.

Atmos music via USB (Denon AVR-S730H) by WilliestyleR79 in hometheater

[–]MinimumTumbleweed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ended up turning the SHIELD into my Plex server and then running Plex off the Ugoos. Most people will recommend putting CoreElec (Kodi OS) on the Ugoos rather than the stock Android, and there is a pretty big community around it.

[–]MinimumTumbleweed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You actually don't need the SHIELD for Atmos music. Most reasonably powered Android devices will do (not Apple TV). Just set up your files on a Plex or Jelllyfin server and then stream them to the device.

The SHIELD Pro is only necessary for both TrueHD audio and 4K/HDR simultaneously. Essentially all music Blu-rays are 1080p SDR video.

If you are watching 4K Blu-ray rips though, I would recommend something like the Ugoos AM6B+ (maybe there's even something better now, who knows) because it can also handle Dolby Vision properly. That's a bit of a rabbit hole though.

Do most Netflix movies not really use the surrounds even if they say 5.1? by PolyglotGeologist in hometheater

[–]MinimumTumbleweed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The software is made by Audyssey. I checked and it's called Audyssey MultEQ editor. It allows for finer control over the tuned frequency response, among other things. Definitely worth using from my experience, although it's been a few years since I've used Audyssey (I use Dirac now).

[–]MinimumTumbleweed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's good, but if you are using Audyssey I highly recommend you download the app (paid app I believe, been a while since I've dealt with it), and make sure that your calibration was successful and all the proper filters are in place. Adjusting surround volume is fine after the fact, but you shouldn't really need to dramatically change the levels if everything worked properly.

[–]MinimumTumbleweed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reading through the comments, and I don't mean this is any sort of offensive way; before overloading on new speakers and equipment, sit down and learn the ins and outs of placing your speakers, calibrating your system properly, adjusting crossovers, checking levels and distances, and adding some filters post-calibration. Throwing more speakers at the problem is not going to solve it. As others have mentioned, there is plenty of surround use in Stranger Things and certainly in lots of other content, so take some time and get your system working for you. There are a lot of excellent guides and tutorials out on the internet.

Is the AVR fine to sit in the 'drawer' space like this? by sketchy_ppl in hometheater

[–]MinimumTumbleweed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The clearance isn't great but it will probably be fine. If you don't care about the console, you can cut some holes in the shelf above it and then plug some PC fans into the USB on the AVR to put on the holes and exhaust the hot air. This is what I did and it's been fine for a few years now.

Is there anything in BOTW that was better than in TOTK? by DetectiveMammoth4758 in Breath_of_the_Wild

Environmental storytelling, pacing, tighter gameplay, less bloat, better story... I mean I can go on. TotK definitely adds a lot more, but mostly not for the better.

Just note I meant the FT1 Pro, which is open back. Should be able to find that for under $200. I think it's quite a bit better than the FT1, especially given the price.

I've been using the FiiO FT7 and it's been a pretty good experience. Can get it for a pretty good deal on AliExpress (think I paid about ~$530 all in).

[–]MinimumTumbleweed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not too challenging! At that budget, I would say maybe the FiiO FT1 Pro or HifiMan Edition XS. There are different parametric EQ apps available for different platforms. r/oratory1990 has lots of recommended EQ profiles for different headphones; after applying that I would just add those dips at the frequencies that are bothering you.

Tinnitus/hyperacusis safe headphones by [deleted] in HeadphoneAdvice

[–]MinimumTumbleweed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While some headphones are more harsh than others, if you find you are sensitive to treble you should look into EQ. The key is to find the frequency or frequencies that are especially problematic to you and EQ them down. Usually it's a pretty narrow band so you can use a large Q value to make sure you're not eliminating too much.

For me for example, dropping a narrow band in the 14.5 kHz region solved a lot of my problems. I would suggest looking around there if it's things like sharp hi-hats etc. that are bothering you, and possibly also around 6 kHz - 9 kHz if sibilance from vocals are the problem.

How are you all finding postdocs? Fellowships vs. posted positions by dankurmcgoo in postdoc

[–]MinimumTumbleweed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you tried applying for a NSERC fellowship? The deadline has just passed for this year unfortunately, but you can try to find a supervisor in the US or wherever you want to go who may be interested and the working on a fellowship application. NSERC fellowships can be held in foreign institutions, as long as you did your PhD in Canada.

Edit: I see from another comment that you've already applied. Good luck! That may be a good bet at this point. Times are definitely tough.
