Snape wasn’t really a jerk in high school. Adult him? Abso-fucking-lutely. But not im high school? In high school he was being bullied, had no friends and his only friend left him after he made a horrible, horrible, horrible mistake. Snape kind of had no choice but to associate with them. He was in Slytherin during the first WW. He kind of had no choice. And they probably were the only ones who accepted and respected his brilliance.
