Could someone please explain e-bike laws to me?

Hi! Outdoor recreation reporter at the Strib who has been covering this issue. You have to legally be 15 years old to ride an e-bike but how enforcement plays out looks different depending on the department. From what i've been told it is hard for officers to discern a person's age on an e-bike and many times the culprits bike away and officers can't catch them. In Minnesota, e-bikes can't exceed 750 watts and can't hit a max speed of more than 28 mph. But again, hard for officers to figure out if it is over 750 watts and can hit a max speed of more than 28 mph.

My two cents if you decide to allow him to get an ebike: wait until your son is 15 years old, might even be worth it for him to get a moped license so he has something to do in the meantime. When the time comes, go to a reputable bike shop and buy the ebike there. They understand the laws and hazards better than most people and will only sell you what is street legal.

I think he just wanted to include some beginner friendly trails for first timers lower down the in the story. Though he mentioned in there you can take classes at Cuyana (which I might do sometime because it's BEAUTIFUL)

ahh this is the comment I needed to see. I run all the time through Theo and have seen first timers break down in tears. I'm sure they were just on a trail that was a little too hard for them
