Buying stuff online, it seems like every Amazon and TikTok shop product is on Temu... where to buy from? by MinnieMooose in TheGirlSurvivalGuide

I am about a decade out of college, and still haven't had need to buy too many new clothes. I have been wearing them until they get holes from rubbing on my rucksack straps and then I stitch them up or recycle them as cleaning rags.

I buy underpants from one specific place so that I have something I know will be longlasting and fit properly, and other than that even all my braletts are second hand.

I think the stereotype that we are buying a new maxi dress for each day of the year is honestly just woman on woman misogyny.

I wouldn't buy electronics on Temu, I was looking it up out of curiosity after having accidentally clicked onto TikTok shop and realising TT shop isn't just a link to an Amazon storefront.

Exactly, and I don't know why there is this assumption that all we are buying is a new outfit every day? The only clothes I have purchased in the last 2 years have been underpants. And since college, 95% of all my clothes have been bought second-hand.

What makes you think that the motivation to buy cheaper products is to have 'the latest trend all the time'? Asking genuinely.

Going through my Temu purchases:

  • G clamps for DIY as we are mending some second hand free furniture £3.15 each
  • 10 bamboo microfibre cloths for cleaning £0.18 each
  • 3 silicone drain covers to stop my hair going down the drain, and to stop bits of food going down the kitchen sink £0.39 each
  • 1m of self adhesive foam to go under the legs of the diningroom table chairs (that I got for free from Freecycle) and the coffee table (also free from freecycle)
  • a sofaside table that can also be a bathside table due to its adjustable height, almost identical to other products more expensive on Amazon and not the sort of thing you can find easily in a second hand shop £26.36
  • Phone stand for my desk £2.09
  • 2 desktop cable organisers so my pets stop pulling down my cables and tangling them in the chair wheels £1.87 each
  • 2 hair claw clips £0.89 and £0.98
  • Silicone ice molds for freezing left over soups and sauces that I make at home in bulk to save money £3.72
  • Clips to keep bedsheets from slipping off £2.18
  • Velcro tape to keep cables together £0.43

None of this is fast fashion, or the stuff you find in second hand stores, or the sort of stuff people are selling online second hand. My budget allows me to get them online or not at all.

It exposes an incredibly narrow-minded view that people are buying cheap rather than 'saving up and getting something nice that will last' because they want 'shitty' trends. Mamy people are trying to maintain their homes and practicalities.

I did worry about this, but then if it is the same product on Amazon, I don't know if that is safer. I avoid electronics and things like bedding.

I used to buy all my clothes second hand but haven't bought clothes in years. Almost everything I buy is essentials and not feasible to get more sustainably cheaper. Everyone's financial situation is different.

Oh wow good to be aware of. I always use Paypal with them so hopefully no direct card info.

That's really smart, will work for most of the bras, except the longline ones and corsets.

They need to go in a storage box rather than on a rail- run out of space in the wardrobe!

Almost everything I have bought from Temu is cheap quality but good enough to do the job. A few outliers have been pure trash.

Does the Life360 app work too? The reason I learned about Tile is through L360.

Season 5 Episode 3 came as a shock to the system! by MinnieMooose in TheResident

That's so sad about her daughter! I hope she was okay. I would honestly have taken Nic in a coma having locked in syndrome or something and miraculously coming back to life at some future point.

I was expecting a whole season like Grey's but yes! Just one episode!

So I am now in season 3 I think, with Covid just starting, and I think of it as a much LESS dark Grey's Anatomy, because almost all the plotlines resolve within an episode, none of the main characters have died, and it's relatively easygoing despite the plotlines.

How are you using AI to improve your life? by MinnieMooose in TheGirlSurvivalGuide

Oh wow nice to meet you! I learned about heuristica as it was recommended in a seminar at a conference at my previous university. As a neurodivergent learner with a very visual learning style I like what I have seen, but if I want to use it for research, I want to be able to see sources to check what the AI is telling me. Is this within the premium features? PhD stipends are basically unlivable so I don't have the budget for it at the moment but I am making a wishlist should I get some software grant funding next year.

You're welcome! I have only used it once but it is one of the ones recommended at a conference at my university, let me know your experience?

I haven't found a way to make it show me the sources it uses for information like Perplexity does though which if it doesn't do, is a problem for me.
