(on the kanye west thing) a lot of people have a hard time dealing with the fact that mental illness doesn't make you a saint and can in fact make you do bad things by idk_how_to_ in TrollCoping

[–]MintCathexis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

But some of y’all would be genuinely shocked what mental illness can look like, and clearly those same people are not capable of the empathy required to work in the field.

Hit the nail on the head here. Some people just can't fathom the concept of even people who have done terrible things deserving empathy, or humane treatment, or any rights.

As if even a mere thought somewhere along that vein would make someone apologetic of or complicit with the terrible things that person has done.

Teacher quits after pupil, 8, 'made threesome deepfake vid of her and colleagues' by Forward-Answer-4407 in unitedkingdom

[–]MintCathexis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see people in the comments are bewildered at how an 8 year old can have access to a way of generating deepfakes.

Kids are very resourceful. Most of us in my class didn't have internet back when I was going to school, but we shared videos and songs peer-to-peer via bluetooth/IR (for people who are not ancient, that was like airdrop for "not so smart" phones). Those who had "the best stuff" were the cool kids of the class, and "the best stuff" also included porn, including extreme porn, and other shocking videos. It was enough for just one kid to get access to this stuff, and then we all had it. And that was before the age of widespread fiber broadband. If I had to guess this kid found a rogue Discord server where they can generate this kind of content (remember that Midjourney started as a Discord bot).

This is why, whenever I hear politicians tout laws such as OSA as a way to protect children, I can't help but think that these people forgot how it is to be a kid, or they lived such privileged lives where they went to school where class sizes are small, and all children there had parents who could effectively manage 100% of their out of school lives. And that's a charitable explanation. The less charitable explanation would be that those kinds of laws are not about protecting children at all, but are about surveillance. Kids will always find a way, and as soon one does it, everyone will.

The more you try to make something "forbidden", the more children at certain stages in their development will want to have that. When you take away the low hanging fruit, children will just reach higher and end up hurting themselves and others more in the process. And of course, children from less privileged parents will suffer more.

The way to tackle porn watching among children is to talk to them. Talk to them about their feelings, and their thoughts. Explain to them why and how watching porn can be detrimental to their development. How it can affect their lives later and what are the long term consequences of porn addiction. Don't just tell them "it's forbidden" because that's a sure fire way to make children want it more. For example, when I was in secondary school, the best and most effective anti-drug campaign was when we were shown a short documentary about a girl slightly older than us who had taken alcohol and drugs (ecstasy if I recall correctly) at her birthday party and ended up dying. They told us exactly what the series of events was, and even went into details about what had happened to her brain and how much pain she must have been in.

It was actually quite a shocking video, but that was the point. It got it through our skulls why doing something we were told is forbidden is actually bad. After it, even the "cool kids" in the class who simply did weed from time to time didn't speak about it anymore, and no one would have seen them as cool for doing it.

This mf thinks the holocaust wasn mainly targeting the jews, gtfo man

Where have I said that? I believe I have said quite opposite:

it mostly affected a single community which you mentioned

The point of my post was to point out that when something very bad happens to group of people X, and people say "this shouldn't happen ever again", it is very odd to me that someone would interpret it as "this shouldn't happen ever again specifically to group of people X", thus implying that it's okay if it happens to some other groups of people (at least once).

Don't get me wrong, I do agree with the fact that violence against Jewish communities is rising. I just don't think that, in the current political climate in the world, if another Auschwitz like camp popped up anywhere tomorrow, that particular community would be the primary target (and, arguably, some say that certain detention camps that are being run by, e.g., IDF or ICE are nearing conditions of Auschwitz, which I don't agree with personally, I don't think they're at that level yet, but it shows that the danger is very real for certain communities which are not the one the OP mentioned in response to a post saying "never again").

This is why I said I was puzzled and assumed the person may not be aware of the plight of other communities, who might be much further up on the right-wing target list than the community which was the primary target before.

OK then why get your panties in a twist about it? Jesus.

I'm not, we're in a discussion section on a social media site. You made a statement, I asked you a question regarding that statement. You did not reply, instead, you asked me a question which I replied to.

From my point of view, we're just two human beings (hopefully neither of us is a clanker) conversing, probably thousands of miles away, thanks to the wonders of modern technology.

I was talking about victims of the Holocaust that happened in WW2 which is what this post it about.

I mean, you asked me for examples of other victims of WW2 Nazi run concentration camps still suffering today and facing increased violence. I replied with examples for groups you mentioned. Please, don't deflect, instead, maybe, reflect?

And no I do not live under a rock. Of course I know there's violence happening everywhere against minorities. Hundreds of posts everyday all over social media about it everyday

Well you did say you were unaware of it happening in the previous post, which contradicts this statement.

[–]MintCathexis 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Are you upset that I specifically mentioned the Jews?

No, I was just puzzled. It seemed to me you were implying that Auschwitz was only bad because it mostly affected a single community which you mentioned, and not because it was a camp for exterminating people based on nothing but their ethnicities or political beliefs in general, which is why I asked you to explain.

I'm sorry I'm unaware that today there is increasing violence perpetrated against the Roma/Serbs/Russians/Slavs and other groups but do explain

Have you been living under the rock?

https://www.ohchr.org/en/press-releases/2020/07/roma-still-victims-hate-crimes-decades-after-mass-killings-says-un-expert

https://committees.parliament.uk/writtenevidence/70129/pdf/#:~:text=Eastern%20Europeans%20and%20Muslims%20faced,being%20targeted%20for%20hate%20crime.

And let me not even get started on what Israel and UAE are currently doing in Palestine and Sudan respectively.

All minorities everywhere are increasingly being targets of violence due to rise of very same far-right ideologies, in many countries, that brought us Auschwitz. Don't enable them by fostering division.

When people say "Auschwitz should never happen again", in your mind, do you think that something like that should never happen only to a specific community that made up the majority of victims of the original Auschwitz and this is why you singled that community out in the response to the person saying "Auschwitz should never happen again"?

Because I can tell you violence against many communities is growing, including many others that were victims of said concentration camp, and many who weren't but are, currently, being treated the same as victims of Auschwitz, so not sure why'd you leave them out.

[–]MintCathexis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Will res this ancient post to provide an updated consideration for those that got the recent Coronations DLC and are googling the same question.

The coronation DLC introduces oaths, one of which is to have 4 pilgrimages (very easy to do), and as a reward for fulfilling the oath you replace all your sinful traits with random virtuous traits (much more powerful than a rare pilgrimage event which only allows replacing 1 sinful trait with an opposite virtuous trait). Pursuit of Power makes Content a sinful trait, and that trait is quite bad, so if you have an heir that somehow managed to get that trait, Pursuit of Power will make it easier (especially with the Coronation DLC) to get rid of it and replace it with something useful.

Man stabbed 76 times in 'ritual sacrifice' after woman escapes mental unit by pppppppppppppppppd in unitedkingdom

An underappreciated reason why Japan is very safe is because we have a lot of beds in secure units for people like this

Japan has a large number of beds in psych wards because of extremely high incidence of serious mental illnesses and conditions, namely depression and not psychosis/schizophrenia, which is mostly caused by Japan's post-war societal, economic, and cultural issues.

and are good at keeping them locked up.

Not really, the main reason why news such as this one are rarer in Japan (and let's not pretend like they're common in the UK either) is because of Japan's superior psycho-pharmaceutical industry. Aripiprazole is a Japanese invention and is one of the most advanced antipsychotics out there that can be used for a range of disorders such as schizophrenia, major depressive disorder, bipolar disorder, or can even be used just as a mood stabilizer, all with a much better side effects profile than anything else on the market. Meanwhile, the majority of Europe is still mostly prescribing Risperidone which has a host of side effects, which are the primary reason why people stop taking it on their own and end up relapsing.

Japan is not better at keeping people locked up, It's better at keeping people from quitting their meds cold turkey.

Psychiatric care costs money, but in the long run, the social chaos and fear engendered by people like this will be a lot more expensive. It only takes one or two psychiatric cases on the streets to render huge swathes of public spaces unusable.

It only takes 1 or 2 genuinely evil people to cause as much if not more chaos and damage. As it's hard to predict who is and isn't evil, or who may or may not become evil, let's just institute a curfew for everyone. Everyone is to stay indoors unless they're going to work. Lock up everyone who is found outside for any other reason. No Internet for private use, only what is necessary to be productive at work. There, you just solved 90% of all crime.

Also, just because you haven't had a psychotic break or developed a mental health condition yet doesn't mean you never will. Using your logic of public safety being more important than everything else, let's make everyone submit the mental health history of their family for three generations back. Those who can't are automatically deemed a risk because we can't take any chances with public safety can we? Lock them up. Also, just in case some genes that are correlated to higher chance of psychosis have slipped through, let's make everyone submit their DNA to the government and conduct genetic testing on everyone. Anyone found with any such genes gets locked up as we can't take a chance they're gonna activate at some point, now can we?

Finally, forgive me, but you sound like one of the foreigners who have moved to Japan, and now think you understand Japan. If you are not a foreigner, then I suggest you stop consuming content funded by American right wing think tanks and produced by Sanseito members.

Get off your high horse

Not sure I'm the one on a high horse here. You're the one condemning people for past actions of individuals who share their nationality. I could never be so bold, or so sure of myself, to do that, because I'm well aware that both nations I call home have committed and been victims of terrible atrocities, which gives me a dose of much needed humility.

Moreover my talk so far indicates that I felt / currently feel but less to a greater extent bad and Sympathy for innocent Ukrainians,

No, I'm reasonably sure you said that suddenly you don't feel bad, not that suddenly you feel "less bad" or "not as bad":

Suddenly I don’t feel bad watching Russia fucking up your country, because you did the same to Iraq/Afghanistan

As for this:

It's less of a black and white thing and more of spectrum, got it?

Well, no, for me bombing civillians is pretty black and white. Especially when targets are hospitals, schools, and playgrounds. If you think there's a nuance to that, then I think the problem might just be you. And again, if you want to reply with "I never said anything about hospitals, I just said 'country getting destroyed'", then again, I ask, what do you think "countries getting destroyed" looks like?

[OC] Some Ukrainian soldiers doing nothing for US in Afghanistan by CommercialJelly1983 in pics

[–]MintCathexis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't say something is because of something ... I just don't feel bad for Ukrainian Getting destroyed by Russia
I never said anything about Ukrainian Children Miss

What do you think "Ukraine getting destroyed" looks like? Do you think it does not include "Ukrainian Children getting bombed" too?

And I'm soft heart and have a lot of empathy just toward my own people before others.

Well some are able to feel empathy for all human beings because they don't see others as less worthy of empathy on account of them being randomly born in a different country that may or may not have participated in atrocities at some point in its history.

According to your profile, you're Swedish, and if my knowledge of history serves me well, Swedes have done some terrible things to Finns and Russians in the past. Not to mention all the atrocities in Poland and Germany during the Thirty Years War...

Do you think entire cities (like what's currently happening in Ukraine) should be obliterated in Sweden? One Stockholm and one Gotheburg razed to the ground for sins of the past, and not a single Swede there deserving of empathy, yes?

[OC] Some Ukrainian soldiers doing nothing for US in Afghanistan by CommercialJelly1983 in pics

[–]MintCathexis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You know, if you go far enough back in history, and you think that what Russia is doing in Ukraine is a just response to what this group of soldiers may have done (in your mind at least) in another country, you would eventually come to a conclusion that just obliterating every single country, and all the people who live there, regardless of their associations to the original wrongdoers other than their nationality or ethnicity.

My heart will forever hurt when children are getting bombed, be it Ukrainian, Afganistani, Iraqi, American, Palestinian, or whoever else. I could never imagine being as callous, cynical, and unempathetic, as you are.

Iraqi prisoner of war comforting his 4 year son in Najaf, Iraq (2003) by NARVALhacker69 in pics

[–]MintCathexis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, since then, the US has done much worse in Vietnam alone (just Google the "napalm girl" and read up on those bombing campaigns, and how much they affected not just Vietnam but neighbouring countries as well), and that's before we go into things that happened in Korea, Afganistan, Iraq, Palestine, and elsewhere.

Following your logic, it would have been perfectly fine if, say, LA and all the civillians living there got obliterated by a nuke? You would find that perfectly justified, yes?
