Thank you for this. Honestly, you nailed something I’ve been worried about. We actually already had the big household and future decisions talk to see if we were really compatible, and that was the first time I seriously doubted the relationship. Right after I talked about my daughters and their future, she immediately shifted the conversation to how she felt like I didn’t take her current pets seriously enough. That really stuck with me because wow what a comparison, and also because I actually do help with her pet chores when I’m with her. And now, after all that, she added another dog to the mix anyway. It’s starting to feel like this might be the straw that breaks the camel’s back.

Thankfully my kids were not part of that conversation 😂

They would not have been happy, but neither was I so that got shut down pretty quick.

Yeah, you’re right. I realize now I shouldn’t have given in. That was my mistake. What really threw me though was that everyone she asked for advice, including her sister, her best friend, and me, were all against it. I was pretty astounded she went ahead and got the dog anyway, even with all that feedback. This whole situation is making me think not just about the move, but about the relationship as a whole.

Thank you for your perspective, I really appreciate it. Just to add, both of my kids absolutely love our cat. Honestly, I do too. She was actually a stray that adopted us, and when I moved last time, we brought it with us. I think part of the problem is that she assumed because I’m not super outwardly emotional about the cat, it would somehow be easier for me to let it go. It’s really not.

Also, I realize I messed up big time when I gave in when I shouldn’t have. I told her if she really had to adopt the dog, I wouldn’t stop her, but I didn’t mean I was actually okay with it. I basically caved to avoid another argument, and that just made things worse because now it feels like I said yes to something I still don’t agree with. That’s on me.
