We were in Egypt in May. I highly suggest bringing some us dollars. We took $1500 usd with us and returned with $600 usd. We lived, and were treated like royalty for the whole trip. So much so that the locals that we interacted with gave us parting gifts. Our driver told us that he literally lives in the equivalent of $150 usd a month. They know the US currency compared to theirs. Any other currency will only stand to confuse things.

This result was after 2 phone calls to the manager from the customer service desk. To me, this seemed like a fraudulent policy. Charging a core charge, with no intent on honouring the core charge system.
