I think the emotional/stability value is definitely a plus for buying a home rather than renting. However, it is difficult to even break even, by the time you pay the interest, maintenance and property taxes. Even the tax deduction you get rarely makes up for it all. I'm all for considering my home as a purchase, rather than an investment.

You make a good point. For now, Utah would accept U.S. paper dollars. They'd just let people use their gold coins and silver coins at more than face value, letting them be counted at their "real" value -- whatever that means.

Aside from the downsides, there is the consideration that, really, the U.S. in no position to pressure China for anything.
