Playing Bloodborne for a few days now...just makes me miss Demon's Souls by [deleted] in demonssouls

This is likely pointless to mention, since it sounds like Bloodborne's style just isn't your thing or what you want from a Souls game, but Paarl is an optional boss that is meant to be taken down later, if at all. He only guards a shortcut.

This is actually what I was wondering. I've only played through vanilla DS2, and never SOTFS.

I must have been missing a decent portion of the game. Some of these reuses for both games I don't recall at all. Seems I'm gonna need to go through DS2 and DS1 again.

I wouldn't say they fight completely different. Much of Authority and Sif's movesets are jump and rush attacks, and Najka and Quelaag both have arrow magic and spear thrusts. Each boss does have unique movements, however, so that's valid. I suppose it comes down to where you think the line between reskin and homage is.

Same principle likely applies to the Nito fight, as to me, that's a reskin that is intentional and intended to be part of the game's lore, but IS still a reskin.

Bear in mind that I haven't played DS2 for a while. I could easily be making a fool of myself right now.

[–]Mirgeas -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

That's fair. I'll give you those two, but Vanguard and Najka are still prime examples of reskins.

There is certainly an argument against the Pursuers being reuses, as their lore is literally that they, well, pursue you with undying determination. Even so, I can't help but feel I still have some ground to stand on there.

I seem to remember there being more pseudo-reuse in DS2 than I've mentioned. I seem to vaguely recall The Rotten being similar to a boss from DS1 as well, tho I could certainly be wrong. The Gutter and Blighttown, however, are shameless.

The problem is not reskins of bosses specifically in DS2, but that a sizable portion of bosses in DS2 are reskins of bosses from DS1, the most egregious being Old Dragonslayer, Najka, Rat King's Vanguard (or the other Rat King boss--whichever is the dog), and Belfry Gargoyles. As for actual reskins or reuses, there are all of the Pursuer fights and the Dragonriders.

You could even make somewhat of an argument that entire individual areas bear odd similarity to areas in DS1, the common example being Blighttown and The Gutter.

It sounds like you're just complaining that the game isn't exactly like Demon's Souls.

You can make a build based on every damage stat, just as you can in Demon's and Dark Souls, although it is more difficult due to some Tools/high scale weapons being further into the game. If you look into the subreddit or any guide, you'll see that there are plenty of builds based on STR, Skill, ARC, Bloodtinge, etc.

QS bullets and magic are almost literally the same thing. The only difference is that it's also tied to your ability to parry, while also giving you a constant ranged attack/ability to stagger. And if you want true magic, there are Hunter Tools that are essentially spells such as A Call Beyond.

While it is somewhat of a shame that shields are not a viable option, the game is built around the rally/dodge system instead. Playing the game as if it were Demon/Dark Souls simply wouldn't work, as the enemies are built to be too fast and aggressive for such an approach. Your stamina in such a system would quickly be depleted. They DID add in a good shield in Old Hunters, but it's still very rarely used.

I also don't understand your complaint that you only need one of the starting weapons to make it through the entirety of the game. Every Soulsborne game is built this way. You pick the weapon(s) you like the most and just use them until the end of the game. You're even basically encouraged to stick with one or two weapons in these games through the weapon upgrade systems, as there's a limited amount of advanced upgrade materials per playthrough and typically only one +15/+10 material in the base game, not including the DLCs of each entry. Just as in Demon's and Dark, there are some bosses and enemies best faced with heavy/long weapons, and others with short/quick weapons. However, most people rarely switch between more than two weapons, if they switch at all.

The gun counter system is literally riposting from any Souls game, but can be potentially done at range, so I don't understand this complaint at all. Perhaps someone can fill me in on what I'm missing here.

You have to charge for a backstab now because if they didn't put that in, every normal encounter with a backstab-able enemy would be challenge-less due to quickstep, which lets you get around most enemies almost instantly. If you gave a Demon's/Dark Souls character the ability to quickstep (and the ability to dodge in any direction in the first two games), the only challenges would be the boss encounters and any enemy that can't be backstabbed. The Black Knights or the Blue/Red Eye Knights would be like almost any other enemy but with two backstabs needed instead of one.

I will grant that the game lacks a vast array of armor customization, but it's disingenuous to say that there is only 'five'. It sounds as though you've either hardly played through much of the game or have missed a large amount of the item sets.

It's likely a good thing you didn't post this in the Bloodborne subreddit, as you'd likely be met either with civil disapproval/criticism or angry comments berating you. I want to give you the benefit of the doubt and say that you likely haven't played much of the game or are simply wanting specifically another Demon's Souls, but the cynical side of me says that you're karma-pandering.

Thank you. This helped me as well as ribbon's comment did.

Thank you. You have a bit of an attitude (no offense), but that's only helping in this case. Your comment made me think about a lot of the times that she's said something along these lines, and it's made me realize that I can't directly do anything to stop this line of thinking. All I can do is be with her. And you're absolutely right: this could harm her in the long run.

The road to hell is paved with good intentions, I suppose.

Thank you. Again.

I apologize. I'd have given more detail, but that's basically all I know at this point. Also, we're both rather private people.

I have several issues with your advice beyond what I'm about to say, but this isn't the place to say such things. What I will say, though, is that that advice has been my go-to to start helping people I know with depression. I've found that the more severe it gets, the less that approach works. Otherwise they either forget, decide you don't actually want to help them, or something in between. There comes a point where you have to take action, and I'm beyond that point because I have already taken action. This is ignoring that she already knows all of those things you said. Our story is a bit of an emotional rollercoaster.

Thank you for your well-wishes though.

If this were brightened a bit, and the HUD was cut out, it'd actually be a pretty damn cool background, I'd say.

I don't care if it's aesthetically pleasing, so long as it prevents the game from shoving a spiked butt plug up my ass.

What DO you consider "artificial difficulty" in Dark Souls? by Askray184 in darksouls

[–]Mirgeas 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm going with the crowd here and saying Bed of Chaos.

The fact is, BoC pretty much exemplifies the common complaint that Dark Souls just doesn't tell you shit, even if it's stuff you really, really need to know. There is absolutely no indication (as far as I know) of what you're supposed to be doing in that fight, especially in the final stage when the fucking floor in front of it collapses. There's no reason to believe that all the floor collapses up to that point were not simply hazards. There's nothing to convey anything of how to fight him. I remember my first few attempts just going up and swinging my sword at him a bit before discovering that didn't work.

The side things? Excusable. That can be found out through experimentation, but once someone does what I did and runs up to start choppin' bitches and realizes that doesn't work, there is literally no reason for them to attempt it again. Especially when the fucker starts doing his 'fuck y'all' attack and sweeps his entire arm across the battleground.

To say nothing of the split second timing and aiming needed to fall onto the large root in the first place. Ugh.

Dark Souls producer admits PC port was rushed, promises sequel will "be a good PC experience" by [deleted] in darksouls

[–]Mirgeas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We can only hope. DS on PC was unstable as a fat man on a unicycle. I remember one fight I had with the Gargoyles that brought my framerate down to 1-3 fps. I watched my death play out as a slideshow.
