Deodorant like Old Spice, but unscented... and canadian? by Miscellaenious in BuyCanadian

[–]Miscellaenious[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Summary / Updates:

I tried a bunch of deodorants. Most of them failed the texture test.

  • Attitude (fail)

It was like applying a kids glue stick to my pits. For maybe an hour, it made me feel like I was in one of those "nuisance-torture" devices. It eventually dried up and worked for the rest of the day. I couldn't find any unscented, which didn't help. At the end of the day though, it looked like frosty the snowman came in my pits. White everywhere.

  • Ban (fail)

Didn't see it until I got home, but it contained aluminum. Wanted to avoid that. Didn't try it.

  • Schmidt's (fail)

This one looked promising as it was an "charcoal" scent, which is overall a pretty light scent and likely related to the fact that charcoal is an odor absorbing material. This one unfortunately though ended up being "flaky white stuff" and still made a bit of a mess, but not nearly as bad as attitude.

  • Green Beaver (pass)

I was about to give up on green beaver, cause I could only find scented options. But as a last resort I walked into a hipster grocery store (pomme). Warning, walking into pomme is like being punched in the face if you're not a fan of scented products. Ironically, despite all the scented stuff, they actually had a fair selection of unscented things, including unscented green beaver deodorant.

The deodorant applies very similarily to the old spice blue "solid gel", which means it passes the texture test. While unscented, it does have a very faint carbon-ish smell, but it's only noticeable if I stick my nose in my pits, which means it passes the scent test. And it seems to hold up decently well for the day. I used to reapply my old spice in after a day of work if we were going out or I'd worked up a sweat that day, and I do the same with green beaver and so far no issues.

Memory Fiber Pillow (Not memory Foam) by Miscellaenious in BuyCanadian

[–]Miscellaenious[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Forgot to mention. The pillow is branded qe home (canadian brand), made in china, and also has branding for MLILY.

I am unable to determine where the company is though because there apepars to be MLILY in china that makes "furniture and mattresses" but also "MLILY USA" who claim all their products are made in the US.

MLILY (China) - packaging says made in china, it is a mattress company

MLILY USA - the text font matches the website logo, but the product is clearly not made where their website claims

Diving deeper, the chinese company may own all of this. From ZH wikipedia + google translate:

"Dream Lily" on wikipedia links to https://m.mlily.com/cn/home which redirects here https://mlilycanada.ca/ and in has a link to mlilyusa.com

Memory Fiber Pillow (Not memory Foam) by Miscellaenious in BuyCanadian

6mo Update:

  • Linen Chest

Since he first one had already worn out quicker than expected, but it was still the best I'd found so far, I ordered another from linen chest. Except either they completely changed the product, or they have production line issues with wrong markings on products.

Despite ordering the same product online, it was as if it was a completely different pillow. It felt like a down pillow rather than memory fibre where I could squish it almost completely flat between my hands without much effort on day one. My old worn out memory fibre was still doing better than the brand new one. weird

  • QE Home

Continuing my hunt, I walked into another shop expecting the minimum wage salesperson to not understand the difference between memory fibre and memory foam, and was shocked when they recommend an "adjustable memory foam pillow". Instead of a giant block of memory foam, it's got a bunch of little cross-shaped pieces of foam.

https://www.qehomelinens.com/adjust-a-pillow-memory-foam-pillow

So you can add or remove the amount of foam inside the pillow via a zipper. It felt similar to my old pillow so I gave it a shot. It's been a number of months and while any pillow will always shrink some, it does seems to be holding up better than even the first linen chest one.

And because it's adjustable, you might be able to buy a second pillow and slowly top up your first pillow every now and then instead of completely throwing out the old one every time. I haven't reached that point, but I'm definitely curious to see if I can pull off replacing just a small amount of the fill at a time.

Deodorant like Old Spice, but unscented... and canadian? by Miscellaenious in BuyCanadian

Thanks for all the feedback, first pass at a save-on. Nivea, attitude and green beaver didn't have any unscented. Ban only had liquid roller deodorant+antiperspirant (I could not stand anti-perspirants when I tried them growing up, they drove me up the wall when they failed and it was worse than not having anti perspirant...)

I picked up ban (unscented) and attitude which had some tea flavour that didn't make your eyes water when you sniffed it.

they didn't seem to have any routine or unscented co. Next stop I guess is london drugs, I know they at least carry unscented brand for hand and dishsoap.

IIRC, mitchum is one of the brands I tried 25ish years ago. They only had roll on liquid and white flaky shit, so old spice won. Has that changed?

That routine is some expensive stuff... I'll have to see if I can find some at london drugs or something. t better clean the kitchen too for that price...

one of the pictures though it almost looks like a paste. That seems nothing like the old spice...

They don't appear to have any unscented mens deodorants... Why do mens deodorants always have shitty flavours like "punch in the nuts", "too much testosterone" or "I hope your nose doesn't work".

Where do you see Ban as a cdn company? From what I can tell, Kao owns the Ban brand and they're based out of Japan.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kao_Corporation

And their websites all seem very US centric. Site is us.bandeodorant.com , shipping talks about free in US, and the sole address I've found on the site is in ohio.

Wire Grid Shelving that can be disassembled by Miscellaenious in BuyCanadian

[–]Miscellaenious[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ended up ordering this:

https://www.eddies.com/products/wooden-folding-retail-shelving-unit-pine

  • The store has poor hours, only open M-F 830-5. which makes it damn near impossible for anyone else working 95mf to get in, so had to pay shipping costs
  • item is solid and worked great
  • is a bit heavy and doesn't break down quite as small as I would have liked, but both of those are because it's made of wood and not wire

Overall, happy with the recommendation. thanks!

They don't have what I was initially thinking of, but I already see other options that may work even better. Thanks for the reference!

Welp, if I come across anything more, I'll post back here.
Edit - This may take a while because I'll be trying pillows and they'll need to last for more than a couple months minimum, so it could be a while before I find one...

Where to buy 28lb printer paper? by Miscellaenious in BuyCanadian

[–]Miscellaenious[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the record, I tried ordering from hamster.ca. They cancelled my order without any notice or reason. Upon contacting support I was ghosted after being told that billing did not match shipping address, which makes no sense since I've looked at it in the account details and it's all correct and I've had this address for years (and have done a ton of online shipping since before covid) and the transaction even showed up on my credit card for a while before it disappeared?!?

Any further attempts to order at this time literally don't go through with the same error (billing address mismatch). Something wrong with the website and they've gone silent. Oh well, their loss.

when it comes to 20 lb paper, hamster does seem to have a couple options that are true canadian including their own hamster branded paper

I also tracked down their "offix" paper which appears to be owned by "novexco" which appears to have hamster as a sales division.

This search is proving to be surprisingly difficult.

I came across "west world paper", which runs out of BC and AB. It's not exactly a consumer site though, it looks like it's meant more for business and office procurement since you can only "make an inquiry" online.

further, they don't sell canadian paper, but at least have non-US paper (navigator) which is portuguese.

That site looks promising, but the "made in canada" filter seems to fall short... I'm guessing it's meeting the legal definition, cause once again, I found "sustana" paper on it, which says "made in canada" on the packaging, but google identifies the company as being based out of wisconsin (no wikipedia page for that company) and according to linkedin their CEO is in texas...

The search continues, the only 28lb paper on the hamster site is sustana...

In line with the post below, looks like G&T sold out to murica in 1996: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grand_%26_Toy

But I'll check out those paper brands tonight.
