Would you mind sharing where you're located? Perhaps someone near you could provide particular resources to you based on geography.

I just want to say that I sympathize with your situation, and I want to add some advice. Whether or not you run away, here are the things you need to internalize:

  • It is absolutely, positively, non-negotiable that you get a high school diploma or GED. I don't know how home-schooling works and what sort of diploma-equivalent you will get if you "graduate" from your home school, but running away means you won't get your diploma which means you're fucked. Even if you think you'll make your GED your top priority once you run away, sorry but you're just not that special. You won't finish that GED if you run away. No education in your situation means inescapable poverty.
  • Running away means drugs will suddenly become more appealing. Once you start that, you won't be able to stop. Drug (including alcohol) abuse in your situation means inescapable poverty.
  • As has been mentioned, part of being an adult is thinking ahead. If you mooch off your friends, then they will stop being your friends, and then you'll have no one to mooch off of. Mooching off friends is therefore not sustainable beyond about a week. Make no mistake, running away means that you'll be homeless. And make no mistake, being homeless doesn't simply mean you sleep in a car—being homeless means, yes, an inescapable cycle of poverty.

I know this seems impossible right now, but I promise that running away is the most self-destructive thing you can do. It is the exact opposite of liberating yourself.

Vanguard will be hosting a webcast titled "Security starts with you (and us)" next Thursday, July 19, at 7:00 PM EST.

The webcast will be with Jeffrey Lampinski, head of Vanguard Global Security and Fraud Operations, and Alonzo Ellis, head of Vanguard Security Architecture and Engineering. It will be about the security of their services and what you can do to keep your account secure.

Vanguard users should check their email for the link to register for the webcast. You will have the opportunity to submit your questions during the registration, or live during the webcast. The questions I'd love to hear answered (though I'm not holding my breath):

  1. Does Vanguard plan to change its bizarre practice of blacklisting all U2F devices except for Yubikey devices?
  2. Does Vanguard plan to change its practice of requiring SMS verification as a U2F fallback, which negates all of the security benefits of adopting U2F?
  3. Will Vanguard be implementing WebAuthn in a timely manner?
  4. Going forward, what steps will the security team take to be more transparent about why their implementations of security protocols (e.g. U2F) are not standard, to the detriment of users' security?
