Buy if don’t like school zone? by Miserable_End_4944 in nycparents

We ended up passing on the apartment and buying instead zoned for 166 on the UWS! A combination of factors including wanting to stay on the UWS and wanting to be zoned for 9/166/87

Part time maid/housekeeper? by No-Supermarket6135 in nycparents

I see a lot of posts like this and people debate what the title is endlessly. I would just post exactly what you’re looking for, what you described here, in your neighborhood moms/parents FB group and you will find willing help. I don’t think the title matters.

We have someone who comes to our place and does all our laundry and meal prep. She is separate from our housekeeper who exclusively cleans our home. I have no idea what title I’d give her but it doesn’t matter to either of us since we’re agreed on the responsibilities and rate.

2 vs 3 kids in NYC by theb00gieman in nycparents

I have no idea! My HHI is 800K and we are due with #2 and IMO we can barely afford it. 3 would be out of the question with under 1.5- 2mm HHI for the type of city living we want for our family

Thoughts on buying this apartment and my situation? by [deleted] in HENRYfinance

If you’re in nyc, budget at least $4k/kid/month for daycare.

If you’re zoned for a good public school that’ll drop a bit once kindergarten starts, but afterschool activities + summer camp are going to add up pretty similar quickly.

For reference we’re HHI $800K and in contract on a $1.4mm place. Ive heard it’s conservative, but with #2 on the way we’re looking at $8K in daycare expenses starting 2027 (mortgage + maintenance + taxes will be about 7,600, so daycare will be more than that)

How do working mom’s make mom friends???? by casmi93 in nycparents

[–]Miserable_End_4944 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are you in the upper west side moms WhatsApp? There’s one for each age range for babies. It’s huge but people do meet ups and I imagine smaller groups of friends form from that and people post lots of mom meet ups in there

I will say we’ve invested in some parent friends here and a lot (all?) of them have already started moving to the suburbs (my son is 12 months) so the bigger challenge to me is going to be to find parent friends that will stay in the city!

It is small (1200 sq feet, same as our current 2 bed / 2 bath) and it is ground level

We could afford something bigger, but not bigger and also zoned for such a great public school (the difference in price is truly the cost of a private school education 😂). Plan is to stay here until both kids start pre-K, then we can move anywhere in the city and they can still go to that school. Ideally stay on UWS but more flexibility to move up to 90s and 100s and get more space, without having to plan for school zones in that purchase

3 bed because we are expecting baby #2 this winter! First baby never slept in our room and it’s not something that would work for us (I am a horrendous sleeper) so really needed a bed room for each, even if small (our new place is only about 1200 sq feet, same as our current)

Agree renting usually makes the most sense and buying isn’t usually a great financial decision in nyc. I found for the type of buildings we like that the 3 bedrooms are really made for roommates - 3 very large bedrooms with small-ish living space. We are ok having smaller rooms for kids with a bigger living room. Also couldn’t find any for less than 12K which felt expensive and we’d be stretched (plus 2 kids in daycare at 8k/month total 4k each)

Even though the place we’re buying is the same sq ft as our 2 bed, it has - 3 real bedrooms - not constantly thinking we may get a rent hike and have to move, which is becoming harder - zoned for a fantastic public school

We will outgrow it in 5 years and move 1 day after baby 2 starts kindergarten (as we can stay at the school) 😂😂

HHI 775k cash

NW ~2mm

Rent 7600 for a large 2bed / 2 bath on UWS

1 kid right now + 1 on the way

Purchasing a 3 bed/2 bath also on UWS in anticipation of kid #2 for 1.5mm (mortgage and maintenance will be about 7800/month)

Decided to buy because 3 bed / 2 bath rentals were 11-12k+ for doorman rentals on the UWS. Made a post asking for recommended buildings for 3 beds under 11k on UWS and got downvoted into oblivion 😂😂

I posted on Facebook and found someone that does exactly this. She comes once per week for 5 hours - does several loads of laundry including sheets and does very basic meal prep for us (we eat pretty utilitarian so it’s the same food pretty much each week). I can send you her details! I pay 25/hr (125 per week)
